Mikuni Install Advice needed

I just purchased a mikuni and need to know exactly what else I need to get this installed and running sameday. This is my DD and can't be down for more than a weekend.

The carb has been fairly recently rebuilt and should be properly jetted for my 12A. I have a Holley Red fuel pump and a holley 1-4 psi FPR. What else am I going to need to make this a fairly quick install? Do I need new fittings for the pump/fpr? What else am I missing?????

Yes, I have searched, but info on mikuni's is scattered and scarce to begin with. I just need to make sure I don't screw this up.

New intake gasket, and get 2 20mm freeze plugs to block the coolant passages in the housings. The intake should have them blocked, but without the housings pluged, you will still be subject to those pesky o-rings that are prone to leaking.
Other than that, make sure you have the needed hose/fittings, and a plan for the OMP linkage, and throttle cable.
It shouldn't take more than 4-5 hours tops to perform the swap, as I pulled the stock intake off my car last week to replace those pesky o-rings, and had it done in under 3 hours, while also assisting a freind in pulling his engine.

The Holley fprs break right at the psi range the Mikuni needs, so I'm running the Mallory 4309 at 4-1/2 to 5-1/2 psi. The Holley fpr is a deadhead. If the fuel inlet for the Mikuni is a tee, hook up the return line too, then take the silver bullet in the return line and reverse it, that will plug the return.

OK, I have a OMP block-off plate made, will be running premix from now on.

Custom throttle cable made, thanks Midwest7s

Deadhead??? Never heard that one tro, exacly what does that mean? Will the holley be insuffecient?

As for the return line, I didn't think the stock system had a return line for a 12A. Do you mean to just put basically a cap on the other side?

New intake gasket shall be ordered, as well as some freeze plugs, I would never have though of that, thanks much guys.

Stock fuel system has a return line, a deadhead system doesn't. The stock accel and choke cables work with the Mikuni, if it's set up for a rotary.

I told you I was going to spend your money, lol, if you have the carb, pump and fpr, bring it up this weekend and I'll get you going.

I just might take you up on that Trochoid. The only thing that I am lacking is the intake gasket, from what I can gather. If you have an extra laying around, that would be awesome. I already planned on a trip to KC this weekend, your just a hop from there. The whole setup came form midwest7s. You probably saw it installed on his car at the last picnic, so I know it is ready to go on my baby.

I make my own gaskets and have freeze plugs on hand. PM me with your phone #.

Here are some pics of the carb.

Did it come with the plastic spacers that go between the carb and intake? I don't know what the extra lever on the accelerator bell is for. The cable is hooked up wrong, but that's no problem.

I'll see you Saturday.

jonjonwells 09-21-06 10:43 PM

Yup, I have the plastic spacers/rubber gaskets, the nuts/washers for mounting, and the extra jets.

jonjonwells 09-21-06 10:46 PM

For those of you watching this tread, I will be sure to take lots of pics on the way. Hopefully we can help others too.

yea many pics i just bought my intak and will be installing my carb as soon as i get the intake in. My carb loock similer except for that long peice coming off the linkage. A stock cable will work wont it? Any way defentaly post more pics when you get it installed and during the install to if you can.

jonjonwells 09-22-06 03:10 PM

Yeah, were not quite sure what that little linkage piece is for, it will most likely end up in the extra parts pile. The throttle cable is different. The guy that I bought mine off of gave me the cable that he made. I will post a closeup of the cable.

Rogue_Wulff 09-22-06 03:23 PM

Deffinately looks like the stock throttle cable will work. If you are going to professor T's place, I know you will get it done right.
The extra arm may have been a rigged up throttle return spring. Some racing sanction bodies require 2 return springs.

nick812 10-09-06 01:34 AM

so you got pics of it installed yet???? I am gonna be installing mine wednesday or thursday.

jonjonwells 10-09-06 03:11 PM

Will try to get everything uploaded up tonight. The hardest part is the fuel system upgrade. It takes and aftermarket fuel pump and pressure regulator.

nick812 10-09-06 03:14 PM

yea i already got a holley blue fuel pump and fpr. Hows the car driving? I hear they have god throttle responce.

jonjonwells 10-09-06 03:17 PM

All I can say is WOW. It is unbelievable the difference. I am assuming that you already have an aftermarket exhaust system. The two combined are awesome.

nick812 10-09-06 03:20 PM

I do but wont be installed till later on. Man you got me all pumped up if i ever get a intake in the 1 i bought on ebay over 2 weeks ago still aint here so i bought 1 form a member on here and the tracking # aint working.

jonjonwells 10-09-06 03:30 PM

Are you wanting to keep your A/C and cruise control. If not, it's a great time to get rid of them. I would also suggest cleaning up the engine bay wiring harness as well. I just had mine catch fire friday, and we are assuming a short from all the connectors just hanging out.

nick812 10-09-06 03:34 PM

I just got my motor rebuilt so it already to go nothing that dont need to be there is there. Also running the duel pulley kit and fmoc on my 85.

nick812 10-11-06 06:03 PM

I installed mine today didnt get a cance to try and start it up bc it was getting dark and I wanna make sure if i have any leeks I can see them. So when you gonna post some pics? I ll be posting some this weekend.

coz thats for a dual carb set-up as in toyota 2tg's etc etc. He will need to re-jet it.

oh no please no more pics of the cable, that thing is ghetto, lol.
i made it in a haste one night cause i couldnt get the slack out of the cable.
did you end up using it or getting the stock one to work?
you get this all setup and running good then?

wacky i already rejetted it before i sold it to him.
pilot 62.5
air 240
fuel 200
pump jets 90
choke 760

jonjonwells 10-11-06 08:05 PM

Was able to use the stock cable. Runs pretty good, might have a partially clogged jet, kinda stumbles at idle, but is smooth on accels. See you Saturday!
