Miata 4 cyl in an first gen 7?
 

Has anyone ever put the Miata motor in an SA or FB? I know that this particular engine is pretty much underpowered and all in factory specs, but I think it would be unique to see it under the hood of a first gen. Keep in mind that there are some pretty sick s/c and turbo kits for that motor. How's the reliability of the Miata powerplant?

i liek the whole rotary in my opinion b/c thats the point of having the a rx7. hence the name and abreviation. RX7. Rotary Experimental(i think thats what it stands for). but no offence to the ppl who want the pistons, cams, valves, and other stuff.

Considering how cheap some 90/91 Miata are now, why mess up an RX7?

On a side note, a Mazda Dealership Salesman actually told me that they hated RX7s, and got rid of them as soon as they were traded in. He said that if Mazda made an RX7 with a piston engine, that they could sell as many as they made.:( I didn't like that salesman.

The problem with rotary engine's is simple: the people who own/sell/maintain them.
Most people, also the dealers, have no clue how such an engine works. Therefor, they don't like them.
I wouldn't swap a Miata/MX5 engine into 1st gen. I mean: why??? It'd be a lot of work, cost more then you expect, and what would you get? If you want easy power, you'd go 13B. If you want a bit more (and less easy) you go 13B TII. It'll be mor work then a simple 13B swap, but still less then a piston engine.
