melted metal inside the distributor cap

the metal contacts inside the dist cap are partially melted!! is this normal???

you sure theyre melted? they will wear away over time, cant really see how they could melt though

midnight mechanic 05-13-13 06:29 AM

melted...... as in looks like the metal partially liquefied on the trailing edge

This means there was a lot of arcing to get across the gap. Either the gap has gotten too wide
due to wear or there is a too much resistance in your wires, plugs or ground to the engine.

Time for new parts and make sure the cap goes on straight this time. lol

ya, ordered all that stuff form Rock Auto. Parts came in 3 different shipments, from all over the country. Shipping was almost as much as the damn parts.

Hope this fixes the "don't wanna start cold" problem.

And the "smoking" problem too.....just a matter of time before my bitchy neighbors start bitching about my smoking car, little kids think it is cool.

Problem is fixed!!! It doesn't smoke at all vs. smoking like a dragon and it starts right up!!

I replaced the dist rotor, dist cap, plug wires, plugs, and alt fan belt. I think that the new plugs what was really needed.

Also, put some Alumi-Seal in the radiator and Bardahl Stop Smoke (it helped somewhat).

$88 to Rock Auto for premium parts vs. $98 plus tax if I got things from O'Reily/Autozone/AdvanceAuto. So Rock Auto saved me $10 + $8 tax.

The bitch is $24 of those $88 were for shipping!!

When you shop for rock auto parts you have to pay attention to the shipping locations. It shows you where they'll ship from in your shopping cart. They have several warehouses. You can almost always set it up so you get everything from one warehouse, and you end up paying 9 to 12 dollars in shipping. I usually pay 1/3 of parts store prices when I use rock auto. The key is to get it all shipping from one warehouse.

Good to hear you got it running well though.
