Yeah, thats what i ment. Sorry it was still early when i wrote that. :D

Sterlilng would you care to elaborate on these PITFALLS?

I just followed the write-up here and it was pretty simple; getting those damn pins out sucks but other than the hardest part tying the wires together(hope those two garbage twists hold up). I'm going outside now to put the vacuum acutator back on and then for a test drive.

Garbage ties? I would strongly suggest something a bit stronger than that. Then again, if it breaks you just lose secondaries, the car will still work fine otherwise. Hey maquire: should i just start a new thread for the writeup? it will take a few posts since the pics are pretty big.

actually i already lost secondaries. It just took this to realize it.
the car bogs when i get into the secondaries and just won't accelerate.
I've suspected this for some time, just was hoping it was something going mechanical would fix

Yes...Garbage ties. It's simply a source of wire found around the home, that's all. I have one carb that has had that wire on it for a year or so with absolutely no problem. You just have to wrap it around a few times. You can be tidy with the wire from garbage bag twist ties. But you can feel free to use anything your lil' heart desires!

As far as removing the box, well I guess it's a matter of taste. I don't like extra shit on my carb or engine that does'nt need to be there.

Pitfalls can include; messing with your carb but never having bothered to tune it beforehand (so your results suck, and it's easy to blame it on the mod); Thinking that noone has ever fucked with the carb before you, even though you may be the cars 2nd, third, or even fourth owner, and not realizing that the previous 'carburetor-fucker-wither' had'nt set the throttle stop correctly. Or the cable. So you can be trying to over rotate the shaft, and jamming the butterflies, putting a permanent indentation on both sides of each that throws your idle mixture off...forever; Or your butterflies are'nt opening all the way, in which case you're not reaping the maximum potential of your carb. Also, if the carb linkage has ever been jammed or comprimised in any way, the tab that "prompts" the secondary shaft spring to release may not be letting them open all the way when they those linkage parts are wired together.

To be blunt, you could go through much trouble for a mod that really seems to SUCK- all because of some tiny overlooked thing!

Hey cool, if garbage ties work then go for it. Maybe its just my car, but it seems like the spring is too stiff for a garbage tie to hold it. Whatever, its all good. Anyone have a pic of the two linkages tied together so I can complete my writeup?

Sterling 11-15-02 11:04 PM

The tie is'nt being pulled by the spring. It's actually pushing them together at that point. The tie sees no resistance. (I don't think.) Anyway I removed the spring.
Ehh. You'll see when I finally get a picture up. You won't recognize my carb as a Nikki, but just because my carb is naked does'nt mean those mods work any better on it.

When I started toying with the secondaries, it was at the same time I was machining new linkages for my Yaw carb. The idea was to develop a mechanical secondary operation that utilized a very stiff piece of wire that hooked into a spiraling slot on an aluminum disk. There would be several slots to choose from, each offering a slightly different timing for when the secondaries open in relation to the primaries. This would add a large variable to the tuning.
It's a bit more tricky than it sounds because the secondaries and the primaries STILL have to always finish opening and be straight up and down at the SAME TIME. (This is why the slots would spiral towards the center.)
I dunno - Do some doodeling on paper and you'll suddenly see just what I mean if I'm not getting it across right.

Anyway, the whole idea of that and other mods is to be able to set the car up for a street race, and then be able to set it up for a long MPG conciencous trip - all with no tools and in abot two minutes.

Mmmmm-Always searching for the best of both worlds!

Yeah, you probably should. It would make the guide alot cleaner.
