Mechanical Secondaries Boo Boo ?????
 

OK, So whilst we were recently working on my carb we removed the throttle body.

To cut a rather long story short, the next day the go pedal was stiff and crunchy, didn't think too much off it as by the next day all seemed OK. Although, within a week I did think that the car was different in some way but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

What seems to have happened is that we have accidently put the wrong throttle body on and it now has Mechanical secondaries, nothing else on the carb has changed.

My question is, what are the implications of having this modified throttle body without complete modification to mechanical secondaries? Bad, Good or Indiferent???

It actually is driveable, as long as you dont want to be the fastest on it. From what you described, its just a mix up, and if you cant get it fixed yet, then you need to take it easy, and just check it when you can for play/stiffness. Just be sure nothing breaks, or you wont be able to control the throttle at some point (hopefully not Wide Open Throttle). I did however mod my carb so that it had mechanical secondaries with the vacum hooked up, and without the extra shot of gas that comes with the AP mod. All it did is stumble when I tried to floor it. It did however run. Those mods were a world difference, and to my amazment, eazy! Just check out the FAQ if you plan on this, otherwise keep it stock (switch it back!! ) I hope this helped alot more then some noob just laughing because he didnt do it yet (karma) Later

Thanks for the reply, so do you think I should complete the mod or switch it back? See I'm not too keen on how it is, now that its neither nor. But with all the talk about mechanical secondaries I am thinking if its easy enough may as well give it a go?

The motor is 12aep which system do you think would be better.

Well if you have no emmissions then hell yea do the mod! Its so easy to do too. I'm not so sure what you mean by 12Aep?.. I'm guessing its just a 12A.. Just take a tour throught the FAQ about the carb mods before you do anything.

Sorry 12a Extended port (didn't know if that would make any difference), thanks for the imput Anex 570, might give it a go, can always change it back if I dont like it I guess.

Go ahead and do it. You'll see how easy it is to "un"do if you don't like it. I recommend it for an extended port.

My concern is that the "crunchy" feeling was linkage being squished a bit.
I suggest that you carefully check the linkage against a known good carb with unmodded linkage just to be certain things didn't get bent...particularly wire bits.

Look up "Carb Crap...Nikki Mods" in the archive. There's an accelerator pump mod that MAKES this mech secs business worth it. ;)

The crunchy feeling was only in the first day of the mix up, I'm figuring perhaps the butterfies were a little how ya going. Seems OK now, cepting that the car is definately not all it should be. ran smoother and I think quicker before this happened. Quite boggy now under bout 4500rpm.
I will check the linkages I have 2 spare carbs in the garage. The linkages are welded. I have read "carb Crap" good read, I'm just not sure (Iam pretty industrious) If I can do the lever mod??
One more Question, I know i t will use more gas, but will it use like heaps more.

"Heaps" is subjective. More gas? Yes. You wanna go fast, or not?
You need to dial in your carb to it's maximum performance potential, and then weigh the performance against the fuel consumption. With your newly aquired tuning experience (specific to that carb) you can then fair a jetting and AP adjustment compromise that appeals to your specific needs.

Hey Dennis, Just thought I would let you know that after plugging the vaccum hole the car is running great, Iam tickled, intending on doing the "AP trick" on the weekend.
