The thing with RX-7s is that they may not be loud per se, but rotaries sound like they're running flat out pretty much all the time, compared to a piston engine. So when your asshat of a neighbour hears you coming down the street, he figues that not only do you have a loudish exhaust, but you're driving recklessly fast, thus the nastly little note.

Not much you can do about it except try and short shift around the neighbourhood to cut the noise down some.

I agree w/ them, make the first move, keep an eye on your car and you should also find out who put the warning on your car.

The problem with contacting the police first is,, (1) that **** always backfires. (2) your attracting attention to yourself : to the wrong people : Keep the note safe !
don't be paranoid and set up a sentry at night, If ANYthing happens to your car. Then involve the cops,
whoever wrote the note will be the culprit. Also remember some of those people have been there for years and don't like things to change. and being 2 months new to the hood they are not used to you and the cars note. there's always middle ground !! Most wars end with all sides agreeing on a middle ground.
smoke a fatty for me !! poke smot ...Lol

Drop the muffler and do some 3AM redline runs to show your "appreciation".

mark, I disagree completely.

If he is in fact stock exhaust, it's loud, but not "illegal loud" and therefore it will only aid his cause to involve the police - BEFORE they show up because of some asshat neighbor who calls them in.

Trust me on this - it won't backfire, it can only make his side better

Hah I was out doing powerslides in front of my friend's house (ground was wet but car is hella noisy) and his neighbor came out of the house wearing nothing but boxers with his wife following also wearing next to nothing...
He came up to me all red in the face and trembling and said 'I ought to punch your f*cking face off' etc etc...

I figure I interrupted his punani for the month considering it was like 4pm

i have had four of my nieghbors come over to complain to me about my exhaust, but no threats. One of the times was deserved though, cuz i was going too fast when i shouldn't have.
One of my neighbors actually came over and asked when i was going to get a muffler put back on my car, and i just pointed to the one that i have (straight through dynomax) and got back in my car and left.
i would keep an eye on your car though, just incase **** does hit the fan

People suck...

Its that simple.

Are any of the men in the neighbourhood having a mid life crises solved with a Harly? Because if they are then just blame it on the bike...

might want to be proactive and install a supertrapp end disc or a monza dual tip slash cut with resonators.

i put a magnaflow straight thru muffler on my V6 amigo and it was too loud for me. The dual monza tip knocked it down a few decibles and took the high pitch and raspiness out of it.

Just trying to help out!

I had a note on my 1971 MGB convertible once.

Of course, I had a custom loud exhaust.....quite similar to a modified rotary sound.

The note said, that the next time the people even HEAR my car, they would call the police and have the car towed away.

I just crumpled the note, and threw it away.

About 4 days later, I get another note, that says "Say goodbye to your car. - Jake M."

The IDIOT signed his name to a threat on my property. How stupid can someone be?

So, I called the cops, and they came out, looked at the note, and asked if I have done anything to provoke someone in the neighborhood. I started my car for them, and revved it up....and the POLICE said that it didn't sound excessively loud.

While I was doing this....."Jake M." came pulling up to the scene, to talk to the cops.......ON A HARLEY!

The police asked this guy, if he wrote the note, and he was more than happy to tell them that it was indeed him. The cops explained that they just finished writing up a report pertaining to the notes on my car, and they knew who to look for, if anything was to become damaged.

The guy was actually SHOCKED that the police weren't hauling my car away. One of the cops said that his Harley was clearly 2-3 times louder than my car. The guy attempted to argue that fact...until the cop stopped him in mid sentence, to tell him he should get his hearing checked.

The guy seemed so upset, and after the police were ready to head out, the guy just left.

- This is the BEST part....

He was so pissed that the cops didn't take his side.....that after he went around the corner in the townhouse complex.....he floored it, racing off all stupid. The 2 cops told me to call the number on a card they gave me, if any trouble happened....and they hopped in their car.....turned on their lights....and pulled the guy over on the first street out of the complex.

WHAT A COMPLETE RETARD!

Lucky for me, after a good few laughs, nothing ever happened to my car. The guy moved out a little over a month later, and I was relieved.

Ahh......memories.

Anyways.......be cool with your neighbors, if you can. If you know your exhaust is way too loud, try to tone it down. They may be the only ones who happen to see some people breaking into your Rx-7, and it would suck if they just looked away, and let it happen.

Oich... reading this, I'd just like to say I'm glad I live in middle-of-*******-nowhere Wisconsin. I had the ITA car doing an 8-hour breakin of its new engine, at a noise level such that I was wearing earplugs. Amusingly enough, it wouldn't pass noise restrictions *AT THE RACE TRACK* with that exhaust setup on it. We also end up doing things like driving it down public roads to test stuff occasionally.

... this was a pointless post. So nyeah!

Let me tell you what you don't want to do.
You don't want to do anything that starts a nasty little neighborhood conflagration that you will not win. I assume by your profanity-peppered post that you are probably a young feller with more attitude than common sense. That does not bode well for you in this kind of situation, as the police will undoubtedly pick up on this as well. My advice: keep it quiet, and be courteous.

Get a meter to measure sound. SPL meter I think. Might be found at radio shack. get a reading off your car and compare it to the written laws.

Remember that laws can be changed. It does not take much for a city council to ammend a law to correct the problem. If you are legal today, you may not be tomorow.

Man I feel bad for you. When I leave my driveway all my neighbors give me a thumbs up, even the old people. If they don't like it, they can kiss my ***.

Man, I hate when people are like that, when I had my firebird, some people in my apartment complex didn't like me, and instead of a note, they threw burritos and lunch meat on my car, it sat there for afew hours in the sun (I was out of town) and it messed my exterior all up, well, I got mad, and I scrapped it all off, fixed the paint and what not, and complained to the manager and police and such, but continued to park it, and drive it everyday, until one day, I came out, and my rear hatch was pried open, my trunk latch was on the street busted, my interior was all kinds of messed up, my cds and stereo were broken and I yet again had nasty old old OLD *** burritos in there hidden under the passenger seat (I didn't find it until the next day), This continued for about 2 weeks until I finally caught one, and beat his *** (Like i would if I had a daughter and caught her in bed with my best friend ), which eventually got me in trouble with everyone, the police, my landlord, everything, they thought I was some kind of criminal, and Although I still don't know why they destroyed my Firebird (which I later fixed only to get into a car accident aweek later) the bottom line is that they did, and because they drove an old *** grandma car, and I drove a 'brand new sports car' (Actual police statement about my 91 firebird, which at the time, was almost 11 years old) the cops thought I was the bad guy, my insurance rejected my claim, everything, because I 'promoted it' by driving a nice, sporty, powerful car in a 'not so friendly' community....

What I say is this, watch your car like a hawk, and try to find out whos mad with you about it, ask them "Ok, what would you like to be done to my car to change that" and when they say "Blah blah Something Stupid" you say the truth, if they want you to buy a new exhaust system, tell them, "I can't, that would cost more then I have right now" then if they get stupid and do something, theres two possibilities, one, you catch them, beat them down, break their legs, do whatever, hell, people need to learn

OR (this ones abit more PC) they actually do something to your car, you don't catch them, you call cops, tell them that there were some people complaining about the noise, and you tried to talk to them about it, and there was no solution at the time, so now your cars trashed, and you think you know who did it, now your the good guy trying to be nice around all the bad people (Cause remember, you tried to talk to them about it, and they didn't take that as you trying, those BAD BAD people )

Or, they do nothing, and you count your blessings, no matter what though, you have to be careful, because not only do the 'normal' people in the world (That believe cars only take you from point a to point b) think your a bad guy, but so do the cops, so your on the bad side of if you know what I mean, so seriously, try to find the person (s) and talk it out, because if all else, swallowing pride for 20 minutes is alot better then swallowing the bill for fixing your car if something happened to it

**gets off the box**

Good luck with all that though

If all our neighbors had open exhausts we'd all be crying for silence. Just imagine all those old Belchfire V8s blatting past your house every couple of minutes.

yeah ... but you see ... where does it stop?
the same neighbors that were complaining about my car being loud are the same people that have their lawns cut in the early morning, they're the same people that let their dogs sh*t on my lawn so i have to be picking up dog crap, even though i don't own a dog (and BTW i didn't drive my Rx-7 for about 6 months after i moved there, in fact it was parked somewhere miles away for those 6 months - i'm just saying that to say that the dog crap was happening before my car became an "issue" to the "nice" neighborhood). these people push and push and push to make you live the life THEY want you to live. i never complained about half the stuff they did to annoy me. i'm an older guy and i had given up driving like a freak years before i moved to where this happened. i am VERY responsible as a driver, mindful of local speed zones and kids and all that ... the fact of the matter is, my car never saw anything more than 3000 RPM while i was anywhere near my neighborhood for a variety of reasons (except in the winter, when it's on choke). where is the menace, other than my not being 30+, driving a Ford Explorer? (i.e. - totally assimilated!)

my point is ... fennix_sr (or any one of us for that matter) as long as we're not posing a physical threat or creating a ridiculous discomfort (i.e. driving like an *** or any other kind of behavior that may impose danger to someone's person or property OR being over the edge with certain things like running open exhaust or draining your antifreeze in the street) - we should be able to enjoy our cars the way WE want to enjoy our cars. we don't bother them when they do their thing ... they should not be allowed to dictate us.

i agree talking may provide a solution, but in general, as someone said before, i find that people SUCK ... there's this older lady near me now that called the cops to shut down a little girl's lemonade stand ... ... they came and ticketed the girl and made her shut it down (but they bought some first ).

people like that need to get lives and we shouldn't be intimidated just because we're physically younger or NEW to the neighborhood. that just invites them to walk all over you!

now, if fennix_sr wants to squash it, that's fine it's a sign of his maturity, but what happens when one his older, "wiser" neighbors decides to make good on the threat? (and chances are he won't know who) what then?

sorry for this being so long, but it's a personal issue for me that sticks in my craw everytime i hear of something like this. i'll try not post again for the rest of the thread.

Is your exhaust legal? If it is, then get the cops on your side. If it isn't, be prepared to pucker-up and get your nose brown, cause you won't win with the cops.

If you can find out who the coward is that is placing notes on you car, talk to them rationally, find out whats really bothering them, and what you can do to fix it. Unless they're complete jerks, they'll less apt to do something to you car, because they have become acquainted with you, plus they know that you know who they are.
