Okay guys, the time is getting near for me to upgrade the stock fuel pump. I realize that there is a lot of information out there on these pumps, but I want a side by side direct comparison from our own rotorheads. These are obviously the two most popular pumps among board members, so I thought that everyone should weigh in on their thoughts. This thread is dedicated to the pros and cons of the Carter P4070 and the Mallory Comp 70. See below for links to each pump.

I used to have a Carter pump on my 85 GS, it was about half the price of a Mallory pump, which is probably why I bought it. While it worked well I had a few problems with it:

1) The first issue that I had with the Carter pump is that it was INCREDIBLY loud. I mounted it on the frame rail, and even put some padding between the pump bracket and the frame. It still was louder than my exhaust when I was sitting inside the car.

2) The pump appears to be a little bit bulkier than the Mallory Comp 70, which made mounting kinda tricky.

3) THOSE STUPID ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS!! Those of you with the Carter pumps probably know what I'm talking about. They are the black rubber ones that just push on over the posts. Well, mine would fall off all the time and I never understood why they couldn't just use a threaded stud and a nut for the electrical connections??

Anyway, those are my thoughts on the Carter pump. Any of you other guys with a Carter or a Mallory, please weigh in to help me make my final decision. I'm torn between the two. Is the Mallory really worth the extra money?? Thanks!

for stock, 4070 should be fine but once you get to the gas thirsty IDA, 4594 is what I would recommend. Not as expensive as mallory but good. I had so much problems with holley reds in the past 12 months so that is out of my book.

Use rubber isolators (chinese slippers or tongs) to reduce the noise. I personally like it loud so I know if its working or not.

Not hard to install and the bracket is reversible.

The electrical connectors look shitty but believe it or not, it holds very well.

Have an old mouse pad to cut up, use that for an isolator.

He did say he wanted a comparison. I have used the mallory brand and must say it is pretty good. I got mine second hand off ebay which was less than the carter when I purchased it. Noise is minimal, can be almost fully taken out with the mouse pad stuck inbetween it.

I'm not too sure about the carter ... but thats my experience with that atleast.

I used the mallory 110 for 3 years verry quiet, I even put in 3/8 lines from in the tank to my ida and back. The mallory only last 10000km all three that I have had any way, and at over $300 this was gettinb rediculas. Just before the car was stored this year I put on a carter as yet another mallory died. I tested it out for about 2 weeksI found it holds up a good mixture 7000rpm no problem with my large streetport/ida setup, but its very loud louder than my rb streetport exhaust. For the price I can deal with the noise(I will be putting some sort of dampening it bettwen frame/fuel pump over the winter)

That bent scissor looking thing at the end of the ground wire in your pics is a lock for the connectors, you run the wires through it connect them to the pump the 2 round openings on it hold onto the connector heads, as that triangle tip slides under the white insolator and locks them in place to prevent them from falling off.
It works well as far as far as I have gone since my install.

If you get the low pressure regulator can you just change the spring to make it a 4.5 to 9 ?
ie Is the only difference between a HLY-12-804 1-4 psi and a HLY-12-803 4.5-9 psi Holley fuel pressure regulator the spring?
If so would it work OK to get the Carter 4594 internally regulated at 8 psi and use it with the 1-4 psi regulator on the Nikki, then use the same pump with a Holley carb by changing the spring in the regulator to make it a 4.5-9 psi regulator?

+1 I'm using the 4594 on a race port. I like to know it's on as well, so the noise is not an issue. If it's any ensdorsement the guy that won the SCCA Runoffs this year in an RX-7 uses two 4594's. Really I think one is enough but better safe than sorry I guess. I like the idea of the mousepad.

my carter worked very well had no problems
it is noisey put i couldnt hear it when i was driving.

I bet he is running them parallel like the old RB dellorto dual facet set-up. Too bad I cant find anymore 6 psi facet fuel pumps.

My Carter is working great (cross my fingers) and i have it nearly silent! I went to the hardware store and bought a bunch of different rubber grommets and bumpers. It is now mounted so that not a single piece of metal is touching metal and like i said it is nearly silent. Yeah it was a b*tch to get mounted up in the right place, but so far so good. Havent used the mallory, but would probably be interested in trying it out if i ever need to replace this carter.

I have that exact setup from RB, the dual facets and Dellorto. Been working grate for 15+ years.

Wacky, I think these are basically facets. Not sure on the quality though.

I've got the Mallory Comp 70 and I swear by it.

The first one I had did blow, but it was because I plumbed it in stupidly with a crazy restriction in the line less than 1" from the outlet of the pump. The one I put in afterwards has worked flawlessly ever since (two or three seasons now).

It's very quiet, I can only hear it when it's late at night, it's warm, and the car is idling so low that I can barely hear my racing beat exhaust, and I'm looking through my storage bin for something. So if I need to know it's on, I *can* hear it if I put my head near there and listen for it, otherwise it keeps to itself.

As always, mounting is a little tricky, but if you drill holes through the floor of the storage bin in the right spot you can mount it "near-vertical" without interfering with the swaybar.

Very Quiet and if you mount it on the Frame you will never hear it.
Mallory Model #110 MAA-4110 90gph @ 8psi. $165 threw Summit Racing.
I replaced my Carter P-4600HP this summer after 1 month because even with the stereo on I could still hear it an I had a Mouse Pad and Rubber bushings insulating the Pump and that only helped alittle.
Not sure if the Carter 4070 is any quieter.
It also helps if you mount it on Solid Metal.

i say if the Mallory is quiet(er), as long as it matches reliability, then it's worth the extra money. i used a Carter pump for over 6 years and it never failed me. however, my biggest complaint was the noise. i guess i eventually got used to it and it became a part of my Rx-7's ambiance, but i still think i would have preferred life without the noise.

by the way, i never had any issues with the wiring either. in fact, it was almost hard to get the wires off the poles the few times that i had to.

fuel pump noise doesnt bother me...I cant hear shit anyway with my loud exhaust. :rlaugh: :rlaugh:

just installed my 4110 in the same place yet to fire it up as I'm waiting on a couple of fittings for the fuel system

I use the mallory comp 70 mounted with rubber isolators I got from McMaster Car and it is silent.

After a few years it went out so I bought another just like it as a replacement. I was beginning to be concerned about the cost so I took the failed one apart and found worn out brushes. Cheap fix, so I have it waiting to be reinstalled after the next failure.
