M&W Ignition as an option?

Whats up guys! first off Wankel and i go way back to diapers and pacifiers, I'm only new to this forum not to rotaries. Im working on my next build: trying to go a bit different for the track. 12A peripheral port lightened assy. and 250 of spray, into a "69" VW Karmann Ghia full tube chassis. Ultimately Haltech: but initially Id like to experiment with My 58MM IDA and see what kind of performance we can get out of the carbbed engine. I know that the MSD 6AL set up is like the Ten commandments in our world but lets face it guys, Analog is slowly but surely getting to be a seriously outdated technology. Has ANYONE played with the M&W ignition either the "pro-14r" or the "pro drag 14/R" http://www.mwignitions.com/ Please dont turn this into a big long defense for the MSD system or what not. Trust me I know its proven and I know first hand how well they worked as I have used them many times before Im just looking for different alternatives before we swap over to the Haltech.

Thanks

let me clarify otherwise the above would make no sense.
We are using a 13B CAS with an aditional pick up 1 for both leading and 1 ea for trail (as done on here before) and using 4 LS-1 coils (1 for ea. plug)

I just bought the M&W Pro-14 R with M&W Coils........ should be fun.

I have only heard good things. i havent used one myself, but I'm making 190whp on a very small street ported 13b NA with a Mallorydigital box. I've moved to crane boxes now for the rev limiter. I will dyno again soon to see if they made any difference.

Im getting ready to buy a new ignition setup for my 1993 FD. I was going to use the M&W pro-14r with four LS1 coils. I realize this post is old and was just wondering if you had any success with it and if so I would have some questions about your installation.

If you're not making a ton of HP, have you considered running the coils in inductive mode? I had a CDI box (brand X) on my car that I ran with the IGN-1 coils. I later switched to a fully inductive setup with the IGN-1a coils (built-in igniter), and can't remember why I ever went CDI. The system is simpler, lighter, cheaper, has longer spark duration, makes the car run much smoother (especially at light throttle), and made identical power on the dyno.

CDI is good if you really need it, and M&W is the class of the field . . . but do you really need it?

And BTW -- the multiple spark function on the MSD boxes is there to mimic the longer spark of an inductive setup and improve low speed driveability. The M&W doesn't offer that feature, FWIW.

Whether or not I really need the cdi is a good question. Honestly Im not sure. I had it recommended to me by a local shop where I have the car tuned. A shortened list of my mods are V-mount inter cooler/radiator, dual in tank walbro 255 pumps, KGP primary and secondary fuel rails with 850cc primarys and 1600cc secondarys, full 3" exhaust, and gt35r. The car is running premixed 100:1 93 octane fuel and putting out 420whp @14.5 psi. My final goal for power is 500whp. I plan on installing a water/meth system in the future. I thought that a cdi would be a good idea for a build like this but I wasn't positive. I did know that my stock ignition wasn't going to cut it though. In fact, the car is running like crap right now because one of the coils went out.

The LS1 coil have a igniter built in Im pretty sure.

My setup is similar. I made 430 RWHP on a Dynojet at around 15 PSI. I blew that motor. I rebuilt it, got better calibration help, and made 327 RWHP on a much more accurate Mustang dyno at 10 PSI. When I do the math, it means I was really at around 393 RWHP on that original Dynojet (which would make it about 9% optimistic -- about what I had heard through the grapevine).

Mine runs great on inductive, but I've heard some people say that 500 RWHP is a limit for my coils on a rotary. I'm running a MoTeC, so I have full control over dwell. If you have the capability to alter it, longer dwell will give you more spark energy. It will also heat your coils more. I was told that coils shouldn't be so hot that they burn your hand (I know, not real scientific). I used this guideline to pump up my dwell, and it's now at 4.0 msec nominal, if memory serves . . .

If you're planning to go all the way to 500 RWHP, you may need the CDI setup. I've heard nothing but good things about the M&W stuff.

Yeah 500whp is the final goal for this engine. The aem allows me to setup my dwell how i want so the cdi doesnt need that function. Ive doing a little readind and I thing I am going to run the M&W pr0-14r cdi with 4 cbr COP ignition coils. should be all I ever need for ignition.
