BEHOLD!!! My car painted. It is Zinc Yellow, from late 90s to early 00s mustangs. It has orange peel, but it is even throughout pretty much the whole car so at least it matches. Side skirts are in process as is the rear bumper. I knew I could have the car painted without them so I did. Tell me what you think, and hate if you wish.

BTW, I do know that the color in the pics looks like it has a green tint to it. Its the flourescent lights that do this. In sunlight, it is a bit paler and most definitely yellow. Also, some misc pieces will be painted white. Such as - Mirror heads, headlight trim pieces (stock they are black), the new flying M emblems, the rear vent things that the sunroof water drains out of, door handles, trunk hinges, and my rotor wheels

Ya I was going to say that color kinda looks on the verge of being a lime green...I wouldn't say that I'd be going out to paint my car in that color although I do like it...it'll look completely different again once everything is all put back together...that hood bump doesn't look too bad either...the car is shiny but could probably use a half dozen coats of clear...

You should wet sand the car with 1500/2000 grit to get rid of the orange peel.

why didn't you paint the engine compartment? I like that color, you need some outside pics when its all done.

no modifications accept a electric fan. im not old enough to drive so i cant take it to that track.

so its sloooww right now.

its beat the honda civic ricers.

we have a 14'sec honda civic. and a 12'sec SRI here!!! the neon got my respect.

Ian. looks great, but that orange peel is going to be alot of work taking off. 1500/2000 grit will do no justice. Consider sanding and re-shooting the clear if you can. My hubby and I painted our 442 black the hardest color to shoot:

The trick is to blend and keep wet, almost to the point that it will run, but to the point that there is no orange peel. Light is very important also cause you need to see what you are doing.

If you have extra clear I would try it again. I could also give you some great tips if you decide to do it. If it's too late, before you start wet sanding, push that bad boy out into the sun and let it sit for a day before you start the wet sanding ritual. Trapped solvents will cloud up your clear while your sanding even though it feels dry to the touch.

I think it looks pretty cool. Can't wait to see the complete project finished!

Bumper is from a first gen talon/eclipse.

The paint job looks good. Not liking the color though :( To each his own. Not putting the car down. Just my personal taste. Comming out good though body wise.

why wouldn't you be able to color sand it?

After shooting my car, most spots had horrible orange peel and there were a few runs, but after running over it with 1200 and 2000 grit sandpaper, it looked great. Still though, you need to buff with a couple different compounds to restore the shine, just be sure you don't burn through! The paint we used was an acyrillic enamel from Valspar.

Not bad for an amateur Ian. Shooting a car at home isint easy. I'm no bodyman but theres alot of good info here (www.autobody101.com) And it seems that theres some knowledgeable people right here too.

Thanks Carl, good site. I figure I will end up repainting it in a year or so, and do the engine bay also at that time. I just wanted to get the new body color on there so next time it wont be so bad. I am pretty sure that I can wet sand it using 1200 or so like you said rbf41182gt. I will then buff it with a finer compond so I can get it to shine better. Thanks for all who voiced their opinion. Nice job man, I really like that front bumper it is much tighter to the body than the factory one, how did you mount it (did you remove the RX7 aluminum bumper) and did it need to have the length altered.

The aluminum bumper was removed and a 2 inch round bar was put in its place. At least this way if I hit something it is gonna hit something solid before slamming through my radiator. Hopefully it slows it down or knocks it under the car (think dog or other medium sized animal). On the sides, it was 2 screws that go through the talon bumper and into the original fenders. This pulled the sides in so it matched the curve of the fender flare. Honestly, the bumper is a damn near correct width. I needed to pull on it a bit to get it that last ~1 inch on each side and luckily the bumper is plastic so I could do that. Also, I had to trim down the bumper shock mounts. If you look at them, the top part of the "C" is a bit longer than the bottom. I simply made them the same length. The only real modifications needed to be done on the bumper cover itself wasd to trim down all the molded "reinforcements". Also I cut some of the factory mounts off the bumper cover. If you take a 1st gen talon or eclipse bumper cover off and put it up against your 7, you will see almost exactly what you need to do. Next, i will be modifying the stock talon foglights to be the parking/turn signals. I am using the stock lights for 2 reasons. 1 - they look right and match the shape correctly, and 2 - they are pretty cheap and can be found locally at most places. I also plan on using the stock talon license plate bracket.

Very nice job, hope you dont mind if I copy that, love the way it fits nice and tight to the body, my biggest problem with the stock FB is how the front bumper doesn't blend.

UPDATE: Almost all of the exterior work that I can do is done. I will soon be powdercoating my rotor wheels white and painting my center caps yellow and white. The mirror heads, hatch hinges, sunroof drain vents, door handles, door locks, front and rear flying M badges, headlight trim, and wiper arms are or will be painted white. I will have updated pics soon. Also, I am very pleased with how the DSM hood bump looks on the car. That with the front bumper gives it a very aggressive look in my eyes without getting into overkill territory.

Now I just need to find some eclipse fog lights and a front license plate bracket (along with installing side skirts and rear bumper). The list of projects just keeps going.....

Honestly i do not like the front bumper...it doesn't go with the lines of the car. But you did not do a bad job AT ALL painting her. Good job!

but im not feeling the white accents

blonde hair and blue eyes!?.....Damn!!! J/K. try wwet sanding w/ 1200 wasted sandpaper then with 1500. Then hit with the ruff cut compound w/ a mophead pad. Then after you buff it out that it shines then come back with the black pad and swirl eliminator, buff again real good...It should bling like the sun after you do that. to re sand the whole car then shoot again another coat of clear is time consuming, tricky , and not cheap. you would have to sand, re tape, rent booth, buy clear, then shoot, and if you slick it out too much you stand to chance runs. good luck and great look.-Erik

Looking good, interesting combo you have going there. Nice to see you did the work yourself. I just recently finished my own project car, which I painted myself. It had lots of orange peel and runs, but lots of wet sanding and polishing later it shines like a new (sort of) car. I attached a pic if anyone cares. start with 1000 grit, then 1500 and finish with 2000 then use finishing compund with a high speed buffer. Sanding the whole car will take quite a while but its worth it. good luck

The wheels arent done yet. The previous owners liked to paint so there is ~10 coats of paint that I have to sandblast off and a whole bunch of dirt also. It takes me about 2 hours each wheel. I have 2 done completely and 2 more that I havent touched yet. Also waiting to get new tires to put on the wheels once they get done, so I am stuck with the SA waffles for the time being. I have more pics but cant seem to get them under 100K.

I like it, its something different! It always amazes me when people find parts off other cars that fit on our 7's :)

I would have to agree with Marcello on this one.

But I reall do like the silver/white accents. It really makes the yellow look good.
