lsd "shutter" when turning
 

my 85 lsd gsl diff shutters (jumps), when turning corners, but only after it gets hot (i.e. driving for more than 30 minutes). otherwise it seems fine. when i touch the center of the rear wheels after it starts "jumping, shuttering, etc", it is so hot i can't touch it.

i suspect the rear diff fluid has lost its viscosity, or is low. of course i plan on checking the level, and replacing.

what should i put in there? is redline 80w90 oil ok? it doesn';t seem to be worn out, ( i hope anyways), but it just doesn't "flow" so to speak when im taking corners, like as if its locked. it acts kind of like a car that has a welded diff would act.

i was gunna just change the oil and see if that fixes it, but i need to know what to put in there. the car has 270,000 kms, and although it seems like the previous owners were pretty good at keeping the car in good shape, they probably overlooked the rear end. my guess is that if something was wrong with it, it would act up all the time, and not only when its been working for a half hour or so.

suggestions? comments?

God, lets just pull the fluid. Im around wednesday, we'll put some synthetic or other cheaper stuff in ,whatever joo=wantings

just so ppl know, its a stock 12a with a gay nikki carb that works like poo poo since the secondaries don't open. so its not like there's tons of load at the rear. maybe like 40 rwhp. lol hehe

My Dodge Diesel tow rig started chattering real bad last week.It has a factory Spicer Power-Lock, which is mechanically identical to our factory clutch LSDs. A few quarts of Redline 80-90 LSD diff oil, completely cured the stuttering.

Hmm, this is a little strange. I've never had a car that the center of the rear wheels got hot enough I couldn't touch them. Fronts, sure, but rears, no. The only time I got rear wheels that hot was when I accidentally left a weak parking brake on. Do your rear brakes work fine?

the rear calipers are fine. it only gets that hot, (well i've only checked it once or twice) when i've been driving it on the highway for an hour.

although i will double check that. when i had the safety done 3 months ago they were fine. i guess if its equally hot on both sides then i can elimenate that possibility

i will do a follow up post after i change the oil with redline 80w90

will any 80w90 work? what's so special about redline? yes i should probably do a search but im lazy and im sure its a question many people would like to know at random

I run Redline simply because I run it in all my rigs.
Any syn. or dino 75-90 or 80-90 hypoid gear oil will work fine.Anything new will be better than your worn out, old oil.The only thing you have to be sure of,is that the oil you buy says that its LSD compatible and contains friction modifiers suitible for an LSD differential.....

Tires will get warm or hot when traveling on the highway,but if they seem excessively hot,Id check the tire pressure. A low tire will run hot because it flexes more as it turns around.The buildup of heat can lead to seperation and complete destruction of the tire,if the temps and RPMs get too extreme....

My car has 'clutch chatter' when hot. It got pretty bad this year. Heck, it turned into a worn rear bearing.

You should jack the rear up and check the wheels for 'steering' while your replacing the fluid.
