Lost my only key!
Will a dealer be able to make me a key off of my registration?
Is the only alternative changing all the locks? |
Hopefully someone did not change the locks before you.

the dealer can no longer cut a key using the VIN. i tried a couple years back and i was denied. i will tell you however that a lot of the 81-85 RX-7's did have interchangeable keys. if you have a few buddies that have 7's as well there's a slim chance that their key would fit your car. its rare but i have seen it happen more than a hand full of times.

i had a local locksmith cut me a key from the trunk latch.
pull the trunk lock and they should be able to open it up |
there are three ways.
1. there was a key code stamped on the passenger side door lock, the dealer or anyone with a key machine really can cut a key with that 2. the vin might work, it is spotty for the older cars, as the selling dealership was responsible for sending that info to mazda, and then at some later date in the 90's it had to make it to the computer. you can PM me the vin and i can see if its in there 3. a locksmith can take an impression and make a key. 4. replace the locks, this is the least desirable step, buying new they do not come in a set anymore, so you're have to get them all rekeyed anyways, and buying used is just a lot of work 5. nobody expects the spanish inquisition! |
6. The Original key had a code stamped on it.
Go back in time, write down the code, and voila! Of course, you could just go back in time and steal the key, but then your only key would go missing some time in the past... hey... |

time travel is possible, but only within certain boundaries, to wit; the clock at the gym is a little slow, so it is possible to arrive at the gym at the same instant you leave the house. however more than that does seem like it would require some quantum leap in technology, or phrenology, or a word like that
Anyways, I don't know if you're as anal as I am (I'm pretty bad), but I wrote my key code down, and have a picture of the key code as well saved in 2 places. When you find it, after going through the hassle of getting another key or locks (that's what would happen to me, about 3 months after fixing the problem), maybe try that! Side note, I had a store make 3 copies of my key because I only have the dealership key at the moment. Guess how many of them worked??? None. So I still need to get a few copies that work, and one will be hanging on a zip tie somewhere I can reach outside the car in case I ever lock the keys in the car. |

another great plan foiled again...... |
Thanks for the options. I appreciate it!
Funny enough my wifes 96 Maxima key opens the drivers side door but the ignition is a no go... guess the drivers lock is a bit gummed up. |
getting the doors is no problem its the ignition thats the hard part...
Looks like its time to go push button start!!!!!! |
Like someone already suggested, remove the hatch lock (it's the easiest) and take it to a locksmith. My uncle is a locksmith and he does this type of work right on site. He made me a spare key for my REPU from just the code on the original key.

Like j9fd3s said,I believe this is your best option.everytime I had lost a key to me rx7's the my local locksmith would ask me for the passenger side lock numbers that are stamped on it.

According to Einstein's relativity, you could travel at the speed of light in the opposite direction that the Earth spins and arrive right back where you started to watch yourself leave. Maybe if you went for a long time you could get back to when you lost your key...
