My 1980 RX7 that has low mileage and in very good shape. However, many of the vital parts are 38 years old. I am in the process of replacing all old ignition parts with new ones. I ordered 2 Beck/Arnley ignition coils (# 1788079). The label on the coils is "12V, Use with External Resistor, Standard, 803". These were described as being the correct coils for my RX7 by the vendor. However, the original coils are labeled: Diamond, LB-84, 12 V, 0129, Use with Transistor Ignition. This coil is no longer available. My RX7 does not have external resistors, but there are 2 igniters, which I assume are transistor units. Is it OK to use the new coils, and do I need to use external resistors, which were supposed to be included with the new coils, but were not supplied? If the new coils are not appropriate, can anyone let me know which specific coil (supplier and part number) is appropriate?

Additionally, the 1980 model year with electronic ignition does NOT use external resistor-style coils - those are for the 79 with points ignition.

DivinDriver- Thanks for the info. I now know that this is the case. However, every vendor that sells ignition coils for 1980 RX7s, indicate that the external resistor types are the correct ones. Do you know were the correct coils can be purchased for future reference?

I've been running a pair of MSD Blasters for the last few years, without issue & with good performance in my essentially stock build.

You do need to get the epoxy-sealed "high vibration" ones, though, because of our horizontal mounting requirement. The oil-filled unsealed ones will leak!

MSD part number 8222 will work with or without resistors (per the install instructions I have on file); resistors only required on a points ignition.

I have my Diamonds put away against future need.

Second vote for MSD Blaster coils; been in there for about 15yrs and still going strong as long as you get the right ones for mounting horizontally.
