Limited rev range? Why?

Ok I took my car out for a spin the other night and wanted to kick it one good time to scare the shit out of a Honda buddy of mine... Just a second gear pull gettin on the interstate and well it would only rev to about 6 then starts sounding like mini backfires

The car has the Bridgeport 12a bad83 built and had in his SA I bought from him, well it's got a new fuel pump and regulator and we thought we put the 2gdilfs back on right
well why could the car be so limited to the rev range I mean shit a stock 12a should get to 6 no problem.

Any ideas where to check?

I'll probably be pulling the Wiring apart to color code and do a wire tuck as well as redoing and redying the interior... so i'd like to figure this out while I'm at it.

Most likely, the fuel filter needs to be replaced.

2nd most likely, fuel pressure setting.

3rd most likely, timing issues.

+1

fuel or spark my friend.... do you have an aftermarket carb? if so was it used when you got it? it could possibly need a rebuild... also if your running bridgy a stock or unmodified carb isn't gonna get you the fuel u need

make sure your timing is set.... if it is, then go back to your stock ignition just to eliminate the fact that it is your 2gdilfs...

just finished my wire tuck, took me about 3 days, 200ft of wire, 4 rolls of electrical tape, one roll of solder, and a lot of blood and tears... but i'm an extremest of sorts lol..... GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Thanks man it's got a holley 600 with a new fuel filter and a holley fuel regulator with the holley red fuel pump. I'll check the timing when I get off work but i just had to put the j109 back on it to run with the ignitors on the distributor because it was in the 80 so its distributor had the ignitors mounted seperate from the distributor.

What should I set the timing to for the j109?

I feel like an idiot. When we put the j109 in out of the 84s original engine we didn't change the timig nor even check the timing it had... I don't know why we assumed it was done and set but I guess it was just rushing.

Oh and speaking of a fuel filter kentetsu what's a good kind to use since I premix? I've just been using basic puralators and shit

Kentetsu 07-26-10 12:13 PM

Stock filters should work fine, regardless of premix. The only problem is that they are so small, just a little tiny bit of crud in them will start dragging the motor down.

Here's what I did to fix that: https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/dual-fuel-filter-mod-528445/
