Not sure what's going on.
12a, 1985 S, 76K miles (ish)

Only modification is the deletion of the cold-start assist. Other history: I recently replaced the OMP, including the gasket (OEM gasket). In doing this, I removed and reinstalled the airbox on top of the carb, the air pump, the air pump bracket, and the belt that was driving the air pump. I'm pretty confident that all of this is reinstalled correctly.

So, I warm up the car and I go for a spin across town - average stoplight action, never get about 45 or so, and then I'm back home. Round trip of about 12 miles or so. The engine is nice and warm. I notice this not-quite-intense, but pretty strong, smell of burning rubber. Or, at least that is what I think it smells like. It's coming from under the hood, somewhere. Any thoughts? I realize this may not be much to go on.....

Check to see if a vacuum hose is laying on the exhaust..

typically when i play this game someone farted, lol ahhh ok anyways check to see if you may have forgot to tighten a bolt and it rubbing a belt, other than that it sounds like a hose, just as said above touching the manifold.

Have you checked for smoke?

I've checked for smoke. Neither the car nor I are smoking. ;)

I'll take a peek to see if there is a vacuum hose touching the exhaust anywhere. Anything else I ought to look for?

Maybe the rtv u used on the omp?

I dunno about the RTV. I used a very, very tiny amount just to anchor the barbs, but no more. I used a Mazda gasket between the OMP and the engine. I'll have to take a look at the car this evening and see if there might be a hose or something touching the exhaust.

Ray - why were you asking about smoke? I haven't noticed any smoke, even getting out of the car and staring at the exhaust. However, I still have a small coolant leak around the manifold. But, The Smell is new, so I don't think that's it....

The nose is essentially a extremely sensitive smoke detector. The smell is most likely something that is getting heated up to the point where it volatilizes, sending out either vapors or smoke. If it's rubber, it's burning.

Burning rubber has a very distinctive sulfury smell, not likely to be confused with liquids like coolant, brake fluid, oil or even RTV.

So I'd pay special attention to rubber things, like hoses that may be in contact with the engine manifolds, fan belts, etc. You weren't having a little fun spinning the tires, by any chance?
