Lengthen throttle cable?
 

Just installed my Lake City manifold today. Look at the tight fit!

Now, as you can see, I have no gas pedal. I heard there was a kit for VW bugs that lengthen the cables. Is this something I can just buy at Advanced Auto?

I don't think so. When I worked at Pep Boys, such a thing was never sold. Tho, times change. However, maybe you can check out Jeg's or Summit and see about getting a universal one?

You may need to make your own. You can buy the sheath and cable at any bicycle shop. That's what I had to do to make up new choke cables for the DCD carbs.

check the length on the 2g. i've never owned one but they could be used, maybe?

That is what I was wondering. A friend of mine had the Bug, and he had 2 cylindrical clamps and a length of cord. He cut the last 6 inches of the cable off, and put the cord inbetween. Had the sheath over it and I never knew he did it until he told me.

Yeah take a look at the 2nd and 3rd gen cable setups. They are quite a bit longer because they go out the firewall, and loop around the intake.

Bump for justice. Went to a local bicycle shop today. Sam and I finally got the car to turn over and run, and he got most of the jetting down. Anyways, Bike shop. Went there and no one was around, it was about an hour to close. I asked for a length of bike brake cable. The guy helping me was wondering if it was for a mountain or speed bike so he can get the right cable. You should have seen his face when I told him it was for a RX-7. :wtf1:

Got a lot of stares, which brought questions... Hopefully I held up the community well haha. Anyways somehow the topic of miata's and 7's came about and one of the employee's (older guy) said that atleast I got a real sports car. Got a good laugh out of that.

Anyways, back to the point. Talked to the guy, got an 8 foot length of bike cord, plus a sheath to go with it for......


$2. 81. Yes, Two dollars and eighty one cents. They didn't have any clamps in stock and would have to order them. Went to a nearby lowes, and grabbed a 1/16" ferrule $ stop set for 73 cents. got home, snipped about an inch away from the barb on the cable that hooks to the throttle bracket, slid one end on the ferrule, put some JB weld in it and slid the bike cable in the other. In a few hours I will snip about 7 inches off the end of the bike cable and JB weld the cables together with the ferrule. Sure, there may be an easier way to do this, but for under 4 bucks, I think I can live with it. I will have pictures up either later tonight or tomorrow for you guys.

Well, finally found a way to get the cable on!

Many failed attempts at welding the throttle barb to the wire... Tried it with gold for flexibility, acid core, chrome-cobalt, titanium (more like a cast-weld), iron, and other metals, nothing would really fuse the 2 metals together reliably. Sure, it held, but if the wire made any lateral movement at all it would snap. So, I took what was left of the barb (barb and about an inch of stock cable), invested it and cast it in some spare alloy. Drilled a hole though it, stuck the bike cable through and welded it. Viola!

Yeah, I need to shorten mine by about 10-12 inches.

It's a new cable so I'd hate to throw it away and buy a universal one.

Well, for right now, I went to Lowes and found a screw and collar thing. Best way I can explain it is the screw screws into this cylinder, with a hole on each side. Stick on end of each cable through each end, screw down tight and viola. It looks like crap, but until I find something better this will do. Got a pack of 8 for 70cents.

Update bump. Rode down the road a bit, and when I hit the gas the car just went quiet.... Throttle cable came loose at my connection behind the pedal. So having no light to work with (but all the tools I need in the car... who doesn't when they own a 7?) I ended up adjusting the idle... to 3500rpm. Babied the car home that way. Now I am going to put it back together the way it was before it came loose, and try to find another way to clamp them together.

Idea just came to my mind... The cable thickness is different between the two. I am thinking that the set screw was jammed hard against the stock cable and held the bike cable just enough to not slip. Maybe if I kind of "fray" the cables a bit (seeing how they both are just lots of small cables wrapped tightly against eachother) that maybe that will compact them better than just having 2 cables. I won't do this until I think of atleast another way or two to rig the cables together...

Try adding some solder to thicken up the cable where the set clamps down on it. That same set screw is what's on the DCD choke cables.

I'll see if I can do that, the set screw is between the pedal and firewall. Only asian hands an get between there without using a few words...

use a TII throttle cable new there like $40 or used around $25 i worked till i swapped to a wrap around

My throttle bracket was on the other side. If I were to put it on your side, There would be no place for the cable to wrap around on the bracket. I have tried it.

Thats what I was thinkin. Oh well. Sold the OER, my how I miss her.
