leaky exhaust manifold gasket....

hey guys,

as in the title, my car has a bad header / engine gasket....

what would the overall effects on the cars performance be because of this....

i ask cos my car isnt running well...it has no "off the lin" power...it bogs down heavily....also hesitates when you floor it on each gear....

also has a rough idle..but i think thats more cause of the about to be replaced worn cap and rotor....

im wondering maybe if these symptoms, plus my bumper above my exhaust is getting disclored..a light brown....might be also a cause of running to richly....

how do i fix this....?

sorry for the rambling post....

sounds like a vacuume problem. I have similare problems now and I have been messing with the rats nest.

Idle mixture has nothing to do with cruising performance... just thought I'd let you know...

The rought idle is definately a vacuum leak or idle mixture, but your car still has the anti-tamper device on the mixture screw, so i doubt it's that. I'd say check all your little itty bitty hoses, especially the ones hidden by the air cleaner assembly.. oh, and get that ACV blockoff plate on as soon as you get it, it'll help with the backfiring...

Oh, and the leaky gasket won't affect off-the-line power, it should make it better with less backpressure...

The hot exhaust is indicative of running too rich, probably as a result of flooding or partial flooding. When the carb needle valves get hardened with age, they pass gas right through the valves and into the throat. You should be able to see this by pulling the air cleaner cover and looking into the throat.
