Koyo HH063146 - Series 1 RX7
 

Hey all,

Just got a quick question do anyone who's installed the Koyorad that suits the 1st gen RX7!

I've got a series 1 with a 13b swapped motor - just wondering if anyone could confirm that the Koyorad found here: KOYO Aluminum Radiator for 83-85 RX-7 All - Racing Beat would suit?

The 13b I've got came out of an RX4/Luce and from what I've found out so far is that they should be all the same up until the Series 3 RX7 (not to be confused with the 3rd gen FD3S).

I've seen someone else have a bit of trouble fitting the radiator to his 1984 RX7 which would make it a Series 3 but they're slightly different.

Below is the koyo radiator you are looking at installed in an '85 FB. The reason it says 83-85 is because 78-82 had a shorter radiator with the oil cooler underneath it. 83 switched to the beehive and a larger full height radiator. The GSLSE ditched the beehive, kept the larger radiator, placed the oil cooler in front of it instead of below. I had no trouble installing it. It was a direct fit and the shroud fits over it. The only difference from OEM is that it is missing a port near the outlet for the No.2 temp sensor.

I'm not an expert on swapping parts around so I can't say whether this radiator will hang without modifications to your early model radiator bracket, or whether you will still be able to use the shroud (if you were even planning to).

What I can say is that if you go with this radiator you will need to find a way to mount the oil cooler in front of it and you'll want to make new oil cooler lines (Racing Beat sells a kit you can assemble yourself).

One other thing, if you order from Racing Beat, the radiator doesn't come with a cap, so add that to your shopping cart separately. (I didn't know this and had to place a second order)

Ahh - thank you very much for the very helpful response! It seems like a lot more hassle than it's worth for me then. Unfortunate - there isn't that much selection for rads down under haha

I had to cut some of the aluminum away for mounting on an SE.
 

Just be aware that the radiator will fit for overall size and works well to cool the car in AZ summertime, but will take some slight mods to fit where it belongs. Nothing that can't be fixed with a Dremel tool or even some hand files. Also, the top level sensor doesn't allow enough thread depth to use the stock coolant level sensor. I moved the sensor to the overflow bottle and grounded the fluid in the bottle with a section of coat hanger wire attached to ground.

Is that something they perhaps fixed with later builds? I'll have to take a closer look but in the photo above mine is in place and I don't recall it bottoming out when I was screwing it in. I haven't filled the system with coolant yet or started the motor.

I have it on good authority from a buddy that this radiator is awesome so long as you figure out your oil cooling scenario :biggrin:
