Knock Sensor
Has anyone found a way to install a knock sensor in a 1G - 13B (carb'd) engine?

Are you turbocharging?

No turbo for me...BOOOHOOOO
Nope, no turbo, but the reason I asked is that I could use an A/F gauge and the knock sensor reading to fine tune my carb. Logically this should work, eh?

It should work, but I don't think its ever been done. All you really need to fine tune the carb is the A/F ratio gauge.

Too True
True dat...but don't yeah think being able to get the "inaudible" knock out is good? Or am I too anal? Maybe in FI it's more of a concern?

A knock occurs because of a lean condition. A proper wideband A/F guage will tell you when there is a lean condition. Knock sensor is redundant in your case.
An EFI engine can make use of a knock sensor because it can detect a lean condition and add fuel or pull timing. If you were using a computer controlled ignition you could make use of the senor and retime the spark to keep a knock (lean condition) from blowing the motor. Then again, if your carb was tuned properly using the A/F readings that should never happen unless something Really Bad TM happens. In that case the knock sensor probably won't correct the fault in time to save anything. |
With such a low compression ratio, and inheriently rich mixture requirments,a N/A rotary has little use for a knock sensor.Even the higher comp S5 N/A engines didnt have knock sensor.Renesis might have one,due to its leaner running characteristics from the side intake ports.
Unless you crank the timing ahead a lot, and run some really sh*tty gas,I doubt a knock sensor would be tripped often/ever.I always ran CA piss 87 octane and I beat my 12A and 13B hard.Even with Yaw spec advanced timing,in 5 years I never heard a single ping or knock from my N/A engines.Even the turbo motors have never knocked, although I do run premium and stock timing in them. Even a cheap narrowband A/F guage is a good tuning tool for a carb'd car.Itll get you close enough to keep the power and economy in balance. On an EFI car, they are useless....... |
