Just got 1st Gen! Now... Strut question
After some searching, I just purchased a 1st gen! It's an 85 GSL with 61,000 miles. Interior and exterior are in nice shape. Runs good (well, surely not as fast as my Mustang GT, but it handles a hell of a lot better).
I have a question... getting a lot of noise from the front right of the car. Very noticable when I drive... . almost sounds like something bouncing around. If I park the car, walk to the front, and press down on the fender above the right strut area, it's pretty noisy. At such miles, could I need struts and or shocks? Any idea on what this will cost? Thanks for the help... |
Take it to a suspension shop and get a suspension safety check. It's probably needs new shocks, depending when they were last changed. Also, if it's a new car to you, it might be good to now what kind of condition the suspension is in.
Just a thought. |
At such miles ~T.J. |
It could also just be something has come loose, but it may be needing struts, or it may be squeeky bushings. A shop shouldn't charge much, if anything, to check it out.

check the idler arm bushes on the steering

A safety check can be really cheap, a specialist shop in australia does a 28 point suspension and steering check for US $7. Its well worth having it done as few service places have the right tedting equipment for measuring suspension performance.
To RotorMotorDriver, two cars with over 200k, plus one at 180k plus one at 80k equals four cars not three, No wonder you are having problems getting a job. Anyway congratulations on your family's improved financial position from a recent thread when your Dad had two cars and yourself one all in extremely poor condition and needing parts. You have been able to acquire a 80k car plus a body kit from Australia, when earlier you could not afford a muffler. Your faith must be restored. |
I had the same problem with my front end. turns out my idler arm bushings went bye bye, cheap fix.

Idler arm bushings! I will check it out today in the daylight. Thanks!!
|
Yeah, definitely check those. Mine were totally GONE when I bought my '84 GS with 84000 miles on it.
|
mine too ... i found a peice that was about 2mm's square stuck to the shaft and that was it
|
Took it to a shop. Yep, idler arm, $200 once the front end was realligned. Welcome to the 1st Gen, eh?
|
OUCH!
That's pretty friggin' pricey for anything on an FB. |
thats half as much as my project car!
|
