Junkyard Speed Shop
I'd like to see a thread where the parts most ppl pull out of the junkyard...i mean speed shop....for their rx-7's are listed nice and together. A shopping list, if you will, of things for which we should be on the look out. I've searched threads and heard of the 2nd gen alternator swaps, fb distributer swap, fiero fan mod, and the infamous lsd swap. However, since I've yet to do them, I'll let those experinced with the intricacies post. Just as an example tho:
DLIDFIS (Direct Fire Ignition): '79 - 1 - 80-85rx-7 distributor/cap (81 - 85 would be best) 3 - J109 ignitors (81 - 85 rx-7) 3 - Ignition Coils (w/ 2 matching age, brand, etc.) '80 - 3 - J109 ignitors (post 81 rx-7) 1 - Ignition Coils (3 total w/ 2 matching) '81-85 - 1 - J109 ignitor (post 81 rx-7) 1 - Ignition Coils (3 total w/ 2 matching) For a complete write up on DLIDFIS, goto Jeff20b's site. ~ Ben |
This is a really good idea I agree, anyone who has done a "common" conversion put a parts list up so we don't have to run to the "yard" 500 times to get the annoying little crap that everyone forgets to grab. :)

Yeah this is a really good idea. Dont think I can contribute much except for doing a cruise conversion on a 84-85, everything is prewired :D A 30 minute install!
Get the under hood actuator and cable Get the switch for the dash Get the new switch that mount on the cluster And the little gold box on the drivers side behind the storage bin |
Great idea, I would love to be able to track down some online 'junk' yards!

Alright, after a little searching, I've gathered the facts myself for the mods listed above. I'm gonna list these in a somewhat logical order.
I'm assuming you 79 guys have upgraded your points to electronic ignition. What?! You haven't? well.... Fb Distributer swap '79 80-85 distributer w/ ignitors (81 - 85 would probably be best due to more reliable ignitors) 81-85 coils 81-85 coil to ignitor wires Go here for the full write up on installing your new dizzy. Then, everybody do DLIDFIS (see above). You can also go MSD, but i thought we were going cheap. Because that RB exhaust and Yawpower carb cost ya $1100, you *have* to go cheap. Now that you've found a few dozen ponies that were hiding under your hood, it's starting to get real hot in there. Yet you still want more HP? Fine, Next step: Electric fan 79-85 1 V6 fiero electric fan w/ shroud (Others might also be sutable, measure and look around.) That's it! You might wish to go to pepboys and get their electric fan wiring kit. Then, either get a switch, use your a/c switch, or others prefer using a thermostat switch to control when the fan is on. This info was cannabalised from various posts, but a pic of the fan installed ishere If all else fails, you can search the forum like i did to get all this info. Now, that fan is pulling many amp's, and if you have a few other electrical things running (stereo, lights, a/c, etc.) You could be maxing out your alternator. Easy fix! 2nd gen Alternator Upgrade '79 - '85 1 2nd gen alternator 89 - 91 = 80 amps Right again, it's a Bolt in swap! :D All the details are here. Fuse Box Swap The fuse box off any number of cars. Examples: 2nd gen Rx-7, 626, 323, etc. Add in a few bits of wire, and there ya go! Details about doing this with the 2nd gen box are here, about half way down the page there is a full write up by Hanman. Hrm....Air, fuel, spark.... you should be running pretty well with everything you've done so far. Now you need to get that power down on the ground. GSL(-SE) lsd swap '79 - '80 '81-'85 LSD Axle (drum to drum) - or - '84 - '85 GSL-SE LSD axle (Disk to Disk) (If you want disk brakes) '81 - '83 '81 - '83 LSD 3rd member - or - '84 - '85 rearend to get disks (3rd members will not swap into '81- '83) '84 - '85 '84 - '85 3rd member - or - '84 - '85 rear axle to get disks Here is a complete write-up on the compatability issues. Torsen Differential: There are two ways to go about it... 1. The diff. assembly will bolt in to any 84-85 3rd member. 2. If you want to do a little grinding, You'll need to remove the upper link mount from the Miata aluminum housing and do some minor grinding to clear the Watts link bracket. Find any '94 and up Miata with the R package or Touring package. Gear sets are interchangeable with the Rx-7. Thanks Bobrx7 :) |
