junkyard prices

Hey I stopped by a junkyard today looking for parts for my 83 GSL (mainly extra rims, an electric driver side mirror, an extra carb, front window, and electric window guides.) Ended up finding 2 with motors in them, and thought it wouldn't be too bad to snag one, rip it apart and learn how too port on it.

I do however have a couple questions.
What would be a good price for a 12a from a junkyard (unsure as too how good they are, though the 79 still had the carb on it and the others hood was still covering it)?
How about 4 rims (saw 4 of the standard rims, and 4 of the limited edition ones)

I'm new too the whole junkyard thing, and have no idea what the prices would be, the one junkyard I went too had 4 RX7's between 79 and 85, no SE's though =[. Any help would be appreciated, even really rough estimates. I'm also hoping too find time too stop by a couple more, and look around, all of the ones by my house are the "you pull it" type.

Way to Go!

Atta-boy....
We need more yard raiders like you....Keep up the good work.
Rims? Put the snatch on those LE rims. If I'm not mistaken aren't those the ones that look like BBS style with the multiple spokes shooting out from the center? I believe the original color was gold centers and silver edges. If that's them grab 'em quick, and don't forget to keep the lug nuts. They're the 110 mm bolt pattern but 14 inch rims! Pay 20 bucks, but if you have to go to $25. Believe me they're a treasure. Standard rims in good condition 15 to 20 dollars. Grab all the fusible links you can. Check the door cups. If whole grab them too. Check for any glass sunroofs. If there are any grab 'em up, as they're as good as gold! Good steering wheels are good to have, as are any dash controls, like the roller dimmer switch, and the turn-signal/wiper assembly. All the under plastic covers for the dash are really good to have as many of us have broken ones as they are easy to fracture. All colors are good, and keep all the screws. Center console lids are good to. Many of these have been broken as well. Get any rear wiper assemblies, including the arm.

Now, somebody help us by giving us a list of underhood parts and engine parts.....

A tip of the 'ol Stetson,
Denny, from the abandoned corncrib....:D

Whoohoo, thanks for the tips. I think I kept my eyes wide enough to notice most of the things you mentioned (couldn't pull anything as it was on my back from work)

All the center console lids didn't look like they would look too good on my car (rather faded) but if anyone needs one let me know, I can see what I can find.
Any sunroofs/moonroofs were long gone
Didn't even think about the steering wheels/wiper assemblies, but I do remember seeing at least 2.
Was also thinking about pulling one of the radiator/fans and clutch out, since I hear those go out fairly often (and it would make it easier too pull the engine.)
Also probably going too pull an oil cooler if I can find one.
Considering pulling exhaust as well, since mine leaks, worried a bit about prices though as well as fitment .....
Also gonna go ahead and grab all the coils I see, possibly do the nice acronym ignition system...
Also hoping on one of the cars the rear hatch struts are in good condition, all the rear windows were fully intact, unsure as too wipers or not, and compatability with my 83....
I also noticed none of that dashboards were cracked, worth yanking? I plan on repairing mine (it's still nice and shiney but has some cracks)
Gonna also snag some misc bolts (inner door bolts, some specific ones from the carb where mine are near stripped, the rear bolts that hold on the inner plastic trim in the rear)
Hoping also too find some inner shifter boots in good condition (spaced it)
perhaps some clutch/brake cylinders.

Would it be a good idea too take the transmission along with the engine? I'm unsure as too the differences (if any) between the years/models. Possibly a shifter too ghetto rig too short throw?

Anything else I should keep my eyes out for?

Is there a quick way too identify the year of a vehicle? possibly vin number, or easy too see differences?

Anyone want me too keep an eye out for anything? Some bolt you're missing, or fairly cheap item you'd like too have? (distributor, gas tank cap, coolant overflow tank, etc.)

DONNA 01-21-02 09:19 PM

on the vin ,the 10 digit is the year, F=85, E=84, etc, happy hunting, and dont forget to grab the ACV valve off of one ,,,and an ignigter or two and some window and door weatherstripping,,,,,,emblems,,etc,,,,

Found those Rims Denny

Denny,

I found those rims you were talking about. Sitting in a small town junk yard in Mississippi. They need to be cleaned up a little. $25 a piece.

I scored 4 phonedail rims off an 87 for my 85 SE.

This yard had about 20 1st gen and 10 2nd gen cars. At least 4 with glass sunroofs and 5 with metal sunroofs.

:p:

Can you give me the address for that junk yard. I won't go there and by everything up of value.(hehe) when your at the junk yard pick a steering box if it is in good shape. Just look at the prices for those and you will realize why. I paid 95 for my motor it ran and they pulled it with transmission. but they broke a few things pulling it never gonna do that.

I went ahead and did a guestimate figure for asking prices/prices I wouldn't feel ALL that bad paying..... comes too more than I thought it would though. This is after cutting many things out of my wish list......
Stuff I really want or need too replace
Engine 100
Rims 20 each for lmt
Inner Shifter boots 10 bucks 150
Driver Side electric mirror 15 bucks
Electric window regulators 20 for bothc
Gas Tank 20 bucks
Inner door lock trim free
Bolts around wheel wells free
Bolts from inner door free
Bolts from inner plastic trim free
=245 min, 165 w/o rims

coils 10 each * 2
ignitors ???
Shifter 20 bucks
Carb 30 bucks
muffler 20 bucks
=additional 90 bucks

Battery cables 5 bucks
Headlight assemblies 20 bucks for both
weatherstripping 5 bucks
Oil Cooler 10 bucks
junker seats 20 bucks
=additional 40 for stuff too screw with

395 total
Could I expect too see these prices?
Is there anyway too save cash?
Anything I priced too low/too high?
Anything I really should get? (oil pan, idler arm, etc.)

jr69187 01-21-02 11:01 PM

Which oil cooler big one or th piece of junk little one?

Leshrak 01-21-02 11:26 PM

was hoping too find one of the large ones This is one of the issues I was planning on researching before pulling, but since you brought it up could you share some knowledge with me.

Currently I don't know all that much about them.
I know they are much better, and are air cooled. I think they mount by the radiator but I'm not too sure on that. They come on 79-82 12a's and 84+ SE's......
I would really like too know what else I would have too grab for them....
I'm currently thinking I just need too grab the mounts, the cooler, and probably the lines. I will be reading through my Haynes manual, but any tips, help, suggestions, or knowledge of any kind would be very helpfull.

jr69187 01-21-02 11:39 PM

I really want a glass roof, but 200 american is outrageous. If anyone could pick me up one froma yard I'd be more than willing to pay a bit mor than what you paid for it. I beg you, there are hardly any 7's in the yards up here, and when there are they are piles of crap.

Denny 01-22-02 09:34 AM

Good Work, Buckaroos.....

Recently saw glass roof go for over $300 on Ebay, so $200 American is a pretty damn good price I'll guess. WCBROOKS, grab all the glass roofs you can. If the interior is good on any of 'em, fill the roof hole with a metal a hardtop one. Again, grab all the fusible links, and ignitors that I forgot to mention. Gawd...I wouldn't know what to do with 20 1st gens in a yard! Grab those LE rims, Cowboy!

If you need help at the yard let me know. I am about 2.5 hours away from Memphis. I can bring my truck, air tools, and trailer. I know there are alot of people wanting the disk brake rear end. So look fo rthat also.
I am looking for a set of rear plastic for my se. Let me know if you want help. It would have to be on a saturday or sunday.
If you have a place to store this stuff we could have a field day. Then post pics on this site of the items.

Hey Im from Australia, Tasmania.

Reading all about these Yards nearly brings tears to my eyes, NOTHING and I mean NOTHING like this even exists near my place, let alone in my whole state, 20 ist gens????????????????? Id spend all day in there, Id spend dollars after dolars, you guys are lucky as hell so if you get the chance, get all you can...I have to wait for a local bloke to get hold of any wrecks...in my state, thered be a total of about 50 rx-7's on the road total, so as you can imagine, u break something, its broken for quite a while, I got my hands on a new dash for a series 2, no cracks at all, put it in and the bastard cracked over night. >|
Im currently trying to convert my interior to black, and finding a black interior is hard, considering 90% of series 2 are brown or burgandy, tho I havnt seen a burgandy on here in aus...

lashrak

I have some pics up of my swap over there is a alot of things to do. Number one those lines are probally no good but you will need the mounts come off with a 10 mm socket the lines are 21 mm and are a pain we put the car on its side to get to them. also it will not mount in an 83-85 like it does on the old ones bunch of stuff is different i have some ideas on where i would mount one. i messed up and got lines made and they are a costly but i made them the same length as the old ones and well if cooler wont fit than you have to move it and if you move it you have to have different lengths lines but if you can;t afford to by another set of 100 lines then work wiht the one you have and you end up with ym mess look at the pics uin my post lots of improvements.

If you jack a sunroof, put either a metal one in or something over the hole. People go in there for things and it's bad if the car is full of water. Someone might even want the chasis.

There's ONE RX-7 in the import junkyard around here. An 81, black, no accident damage visible.

Missing all wheels, seats, driver's side window, and the air cleaner is in the back. Carb is plugged with rags. (What the hell did they take then?) Engine compartment is pretty complete. Little if any wheel well rust if I remember correctly, but it was two summers ago. Mighta been good if they didn't charge out the ass for it, and it was less wet inside.

hotty 01-23-02 09:24 PM

Grab the drivetrain. Cut out the rear wheel wells, and if it hasn't already been broken into and soaked, grab the interior.

hotty 01-24-02 07:06 PM

will the rearend be good, or will things have rotted and wrecked?? It has been sitting for 16+ years and this is CANADA!
