Junk Yard Engine Oil Pressure...IDEAS?
 

Hello guys... This engine has great compression. 150-160. All within 10% of eachother.

I am not able to get oil pressure. I put a guage in the stock position and i am not getting anything. I took off the filter and did not get any oil squirting out...

Can someone please help me find oil pressure and give me an idea on what to do...

If this engine has a bad oil pump.... can I just replace it...or is my engine shot? Someone help!!

If an oil pump goes out, the bearings are not far behind.

I have a really hard time believing the 150-160 comp psi, something is not right there. Does this engine actually start and run, or are you just cranking it over with the starter for your tests?

125 psi is brand new, 110 being good for a used engine, something is wrong, sure the measurement for your compression tester is in psi, or is it mmhg, or kpa or something :\

How can I prime the pump... I am not sure that there is no oil pressure... It just is not putting out oil... I am guessing that it has been sitting and that the pump needs to be primed...if you were going to get oil pressure from the start...can someone explain how to do it.

I've never had to "prime" an engine ever to get oil pressure. Just install and start.

Pop the front cover off. There should be a chain. That chain only connects to two things. One is the eccentric shaft.

Cranking it over on the starter... The engine is sitting on the ground in my driveway. I have a tranny hooked up to it. The compression is measured in PSI. And I checked again it is between 150-160 and had a friend comfirm I was reading it right. As I said this engine looks rebuilt....

Priming the pump is something that I have done for years. Started when I was working for a Funny Car team out of Dallas. 1500 horse power engines... We had a tool that we would stick down the hole and prime be pump before we started the engine for the first time. Starting the engine with just assymbly lube on the bearings is rough on them... anyway... just always done it.

another thing that is in my race car... is an accusump... Which is a pre-start oiler that gives you between 30-40psi of oil pressure before you start the engine...again...something I learned working on VERY high horse power engines.

Oil pressure is your BEST friend... you NEVER can have to much pressure.

Just a dum question, but is there oil in the engine? You never stated that you KNEW there was oil in the engine.

I question that compression test though. I've NEVER seen numbers that high before. generally, compression numbers are in the 100-110 range on most rotaries. My 60000 KM engine did above 105psi. Even when the engine accidentally started with the compression tester attached (oops, never do this), it only hit 170 psi.

There is oil in the engine.... drained the junk yard oil...and put new in.

Engine must be sitting level and oil level at optimum. Cranking with the starter can take a while to build pressure and it will be minimal, 20 psi most likely.

Yes,you can have too much oil pressure. Good way to blow dowel pin o-rings and oil control o-rings. Not to mention associated leaks in the oil cooler lines and fittings.

Is the oil cooler still attached, or by-passed?

Pull the dizzy to check the chain.

Btw, try a different comp tester.

I actually went and bought a new compression tester because my old one was cracked... I am really trying to see why the engine was sent to the junk yard...right now it looks like the engine lost oil pressure... however we will see.

Like I said earlier, check the chain. It coulda popped off or broken or something.

I doubt a pump would up and die like that, they usually lose pressure capability over time.
