I've got a 79 GS and an 84 GSL. Making 1 good car from the 2.

The '79 is a 5 spd with a title. It is the main car. Right now it runs and drives, but is very rough. The '84 is an auto with no title. It sort of runs, but since it's an auto and it has no title, I am going to use it for parts. It is a GSL model with rear discs (woot) and very good seats.

The '79:

The '84:

Am I correct in my guess that the GSL with rear discs will also have an LSD? If so, should I swap the entire rear end with axles onto my '79?

The stock wheels off of the 84 will definitely be going onto the 79.

Are the doors interchangeable? The GSL has power windows, and the '79's windows barely work at all, haha.

I am also planning on swapping the electronic ignition from the '84 into the '79.

Are there any other things you guys would swap over?

Patrick

yes the rear discs have LSD.

Thats about the only thing I can confirm!

I'm pumped. I hope swapping the rear end is easy though, I've never done anything like that before.

Since the 84 has big axles you will need to swap it as a complete unit.
Swap the front struts as complete units since they are big spindles.
Swap all the hard brake lines unless you plan on SS lines and get them from someone who knows about the thread pitch change (respeed :))
Use the 84 front and rear counterweight with an aluminum flywheel. Or sell the rear counterweight.
Dizzy will just drop in. Use the harness from the 84 that includes the igniter plugs.

Power window door panels will not work in a manual window door. Been there done that. I thought I could just drill a hole for the window crank after finding a perfect set at the wrecker but wasn't so.

bwaits, the rotors are different weights.

swapping the brake lines sucks.

so I can't swap the rear end without swapping all the brake lines?

that sucks.

robs_seven 01-18-08 03:48 PM

when i did this swap in my 79 i took the entire brake buster and master cylinder off the other car and put it in mine, and instead of pulling all the lines i used compression fittings and just used the couplers from the disc brake rearend to make it all match. On my 79 the threads were coarse thread fittings and the front and rear calipers on the parts car were all fine thread so instead of pulling the full length line i used extra fittings

just an idea

if you have xtra length you can cut and reflare the brake lines with the correct size fittings off your 84. you could also find adapters online maybe.

If you feel up to the task, you can swap the entire interior. Dash, main harness, doors, all that good stuff. If you are using the rear end, go ahead and swap the entire front struts, brakes and all. If you have had the '79 long, you probably already know that its a heck of alot easier to find parts for the '84.

I helped as friend swap in an '81-'85 brake master and booster into his '79 which has a disc brake rear end. It is an interesting hack. :)

hey just do like I did I have a 80 sa that is made up of 80 roller 85 motor 83 rear end and 81 wiring and interior and what makes it even better is that it runs like a champ well if you dont count the fackt it gets 16mpg but other than that I have no problems.
