Intercooler for 85 rx7!?!?
 

Hey guys I have a 85 rx7 and I have been searching the forums for a little bit but I have still been unable to answer my question. Does any company have a intercooler kit that can be just dropped right in and fit with no fabrication? I know most people have gotten custom ones made and that may be the option I need to go with. But if there was a kit ( the core and all the pipes and couplers ) that would be awesome. Thanks a lot for your help guys!

Just get a universal kit.

Early SA/FB Rx-7's did not come with turbos in the states, thus there is no
"bolt-in" option. Most turbo 1st Gen RX-7's are completely different from each other as they are all somewhat custom.

As far as inter-coolers to fit the nose of the car, almost anything will fit.
there is a surprising amount of room up there.

The Turbo 12As were also non-intercooled, so there isn't an OEM option anywhere.

I note that even if there were a "bolt in kit", fabrication will still be required. I have never once seen a "kit" for anything that doesn't require drilling/cutting/reshaping of the car or the kit's components or both. (Magnuson's blower kits come very close, though)

There may be a possible direct fit from old old old turbo kit manufacturers like Rayjay or Sigma
(think the "S" of modern day "HKS" ), but honestly these kits are 20 years old and are either already melted down into recycled scrap metal or being coveted and hidden away by an old schooler, so chances are you will never see them, with the exception of some ancient pic on the web. I assume by your post count you may be new-ish to SA's and FB's, so i will say now, 90% of what you will ever do to your car will either be your own custom fabrication /modification or a rare find from years ago. There are pretty much (by comparison) no one that makes anything for SA/FB's. Respeed is pretty much the only manufacturer that has tried to cover this niche. This is what makes 1st gen rx-7s that much more unique

That is, quite honestly, one of the best posts I have read on the forum so far. I've been on here for almost a year now, and that about sums up the SA/FB ownership to a tee.

Owning an FB, to me at least, is something that you learn to live with. Our bolt on parts are known as OEM to others, since new parts are rare and hard to come by - so we just have to buy "better" used parts to replace our broken or wore out ones. I've learned that a parts car is tantamount to the Holy Grail as far as ass-saving goes. Almost no other sports vehicle owner knows what it's like to have a car that parts are so coveted for, due to the rarity and demand of parts around the nation. Friends of mine have cars that they dump $500 in and you can see the differences they made. I can dump $1,000 in the FB and you can barely tell since it's just buying parts to keep her going and fix some annoying interior issues or motor quirks.

No, there isn't a kit that will just go in. You'll have to make it fit. It is what makes owning a first gen extremely personal to me. The hours add up and become days you've spent with the car. Before you know it the vehicle is family.

that's not really true, Mazda stocks at lot of the car still. 10 years ago, you could buy everything from the dealership, not that you could afford it.

I have an HKS intercooler kit, (2 manifolds and turbos also) the cooler a few pipes and a blow off valve. I'm that oldschool guy that is coveting it. I like to use the TRUST skyline intercoolers for the rb20/25det engines.
