Intake question

Ok, forgive my ignorance but I'm new to the gen 1 (fairly new to the technical aspects of all). I recently bought an '84. The previous owner (atleast I assume) removed all the ducting up to the air filter housing. My guess here in my experience in playing with cars is that while this may give better airflow, you are sucking in the hot air off the engine which usually results in a loss of power. Like I said, I'm new to these cars and don't really know what is out there. Wonder what I should put in there. Also, there is a metal "hose" (kinda like flex duct) running down from where the air intake is on the air filter housing towards the bottom of the engine. Haven't paid too much attention to where it goes. What is this for? It isn't connected to anything. I was told this was used to route air to cool the exhaust, but I have no clue.

Thanks for your patience.

a few things the hot air will help loss power, and there is a little plastic thing that goes over the end to help draw air from behind the headlight area. the little flex tube is to help heat up the carb and motor on cold days, it draws hot air off the exh to help get her warm faster, there is a little flapper valve thing in the stock air can, it opens and closes with the temp of the incoming air.
#3 what area of atl. are you in, im south of atl. are you on the south east email list? if not you should get on it and also come out to are big showing on the 12th.

I live just north of atlanta (smyrna). Not on the mailing list (yet, where do I go to sign up?) so I had no idea about the event, but wouldn't mind being filled in. Thanks.

I always thought that flowed the other way :D it does go down to fins on the manifold that look like a heat sink

Hot air goes up man.

I had a Time Magazine last sumer. I think it was the one with Einsteins stuff in it, and it said "On the whole, the laws of physics don't like to be played with." That shit ruined my whole damn summer. :(

Hey, I wasn't thinking too much about it. I was just like, heat sink, hose from cooling.... It must be to try and cool the manifold :D Then I read this post and was like, duh

I have been very satisfied with my cold air intake. And yes the heat riser closes when your car warms up so that there is not hot air coming into your carb from the exaust
