Installing MSD 6al, need help with trailing coil/igniter wiring

Hey guys,

I have a 13b engine that is carb'd and I'm putting it into a 85 Corolla. I've been reading a bunch of the MSD 6al installs which brings me to my question for the trailing coil/igniter wiring. It says that the wiring stays the same but since I'm doing an engine swap I have no wiring at all. I'm wondering which contact on the igniter goes to the + or - side of the coil.

Let me know if any other information is needed.

Thanks,
g

IIRC, the trailing igniter is a J105?! It has 2 prongs up top.

Thanks in advance.

And now that I think of it, I should be using the J109 for the trailing side and gut the J105 and tweak it to work on the leading side. I guess my question now is what does the inside of a J105 look like and is it possible to 'tweak' it?

Sorry about the thread bouncing, I'm thinking to myself/out loud.

To guy the igniter you remove the back plate gut the insides and solder wires in connect the side prongs to the top prongs

I don't understand?!

I need to figure out how to connect the wires for the trailing side.

From another active thread

Stock ignition wiring is very simple.

Green/yellow wire from trailing ignitor negative to trailing coil negative.
Green/blue wire from leading ignitor negative to leading coil negative.

Black/white wires for positive terminals of all coils and all ignitors are connected together and supplied with switched 12v from ignition switch.
You can see the + and _ symbol on the side of the ignitor if you remove it. Connectors are shaped like a T. Top cross of T is negative. Bottom vertical of T is positive.

If you are planning to use the magnetic pickup for the leading you can file down a normal sized spade connector until it fits into the tiny female plugs the ignitor plugs into. That way you don't have to gut a perfectly good ignitor. Green wire in distributor connects to purple wire from MSD . Red wire in distributor connects to green wire from MSD. Easy way to remember is green wires don't go together. Are you planning to run wasted spark with a coil for each leading plug?

Thanks 74RX4. I read that information but I don't have any of the stock wiring so I'm going in blind. Yes, I will be running a wasted spark. What is the difference between a J109 and a J105?

Thanks for the pic Jeff20B. It helped clarify what 74RX4 was saying.

agree with rotospeed wire direct to the pick-up's in the dist.

Ditto, that's what i did....

bringing back the dead.......

so im in a similar boat as this guy, i gutted my wiring cuz i went pp port with a weber carb
now i have a msd 6al with no power to the coils, heres how i have it wired
black- battery negative
red-battery positive
red- switch
purple and green hooked up the way said above
and coil wires hook up like normal
white wire not being used

check the switch and its working just no power at coils
also i have another question how do i wire up the trailing igniter?

I'm unsure of why there is no power to the coil. Sorry, wish I could help. I just started sorting out my mounting for the coils/MSD box. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

Which igniter are you using for the trailing side? 105 or 109? I used the following website as a guide for my ignition setup. I'm going to use the J109 igniter on the trailing side and instead of gutting another oem igniter I'm going to use the method that Jeff20B kindly suggest.

IIRC u should be able to check if the coils are working or if the power is there by turning the ignition on and take the white wire and tap it on a good ground, this should make the coils fire (u are just acting like a breaker point by grounding and ungrounding the white wire) when running an MSD, the MSD is supplying all the power to the coils through itself. as long as the thick black and red wires are going to their appropriate batt. terminals and the thin red wire has a 12v +, then the MSD should be active and just needs a trigger source (whether its the white wire or the purple/green)
