Imsa Gtu Rx-7 Project

I am building a fully-functioning 1979 IMSA GTU #77 RX-7 replica for non-competitive track use. Any idea where I can find authentic fender flares, airdam, and wing? Any condition considered. Please see http://www.ebbro.com/catalogue2001/m...ange/index.htm for pictures.

Try www.mariahmotorsports.com they may have one.

Not sure where you can get those bolt on fender flares.

But are those speakers on the rear of the car I see?? why?

Those "Speakers" are for the fuel inlets.
I've got a sticker set for that car, cept 1/64th scale :)
I know the Aussie's have those flares somewhere.
The wing looks like the IMSA Super wing from Erebuni I belive.
The wheels will be the hard part, along with finding a 7 with no sunroof.
Glad to see you choose the Orange over the Green :)

Figured those weren't speakers but sure did look like them. Must make for one quick fuel up in the pits.

Personally, I like the looks of the Racing Beat GTU car better. Now that's some serious rubber! ;)

If it was a 79 IMSA, it would have to be the factory widebody kit because the curves have to be approved by the sanctioning body holding the races.

www.mazdamotorsports.com - the best source for flares.

Is that radio controled. All the other detail guys at my work have radio controled versions of there cars. and I want one.

David88vert 05-05-02 09:09 PM

It's not the exact same kit, but I have the Japco Raceglass kit.

I have found those flares! Go to www.autostyleautomotive.com this is an Austrailian co. I requested some info on Fri. I have not heard back from them! Let me know if you do. Hey, also check out www.ipravic.com.au . This is the sanctioning body that runs these cars.

There's this one on eBay, but it's for a 81-85, so it isn't entirely authentic, not that the Austrailian one would be either. Any word back on the price of their kits?

i am thinking to get IMSA GTU kit too.
but don't know what kind of wheel will suit this super wide body.
on www.mariahmotorsports.com, said, those kit are suit for 10x16 or 11x16 wheels. it's too big for road use i think. since i don't have huge power, and don't drive that fast.

You guys are great! Thanks for all the info about flares and fiberglass. I'm still looking for parts that exactly match the '79 car.

I agree that the Racing Beat GTU car is impressive, but I'm interested in the tamer, earlier setup that was run at Daytona in '79. Take a look at http://amsoilrs.hypermart.net/sections/mags/cd.html for a decent Car and Driver article on the Racing Beat 1979 GTU car.

Hey Zach, how much for the kit? Are the rear fenders molded on your car or will they come off easy?

zyounker 05-08-02 03:05 PM

Well, it would be for the whole car. Check your email..

This is my car; I have had it since 1994. Shown are the IMSA Mk-1 fenders. The picture you posted showed the early Mazda factory add on flares. All the IMSA racers quickly abandoned those early Mazda tack on flares when Dave Kent showed up with his new beautiful designed fenders. Everyone quickly made copies of the Dave Kent body work. Those fenders on my blue #79 are copies of those designed by Dave Kent. ISC racing sells copies of Dave Kent IMSA Mk-1 bodywork.

The body kits sold by Japco are IMSA Mk-II bodywork.

The best book that documents this is titled "Mazda Motorsports" by Connie Goudinoff. This book is subtitled "20 Victorious Years in America"
