igniters...igniters...igniters

I think I have finally solved my cars problem. I asked the guy at the mazda dealership in Knoxville what was wrong with my car and he said that it could be the igniters. I had him test my coild and he said they are ok.

He said if the delearship ordered igniters than they would cost about 560 for both. Thats more than I paid for my car and i don't want to pay it.

Okay to the point, I was wondering if the igniters off a second gen rx7 would work on mine or maybe the igniters of a non-gslse would work. Maybe even some off another car. What should I do????

Thanks

what exactly was your problem? I don't remember. I'd say your best bet (if it sounds like ignitors not something else cheaper to replace), would be to go to the local wrecker's and tell them you need a distributor (that way you don't say IGNITORS which means $$$ to them), and pull it off of a car. If you have good luck, they'll say something like $20 for the dizzy, and then you've got your ignitors too... That's what I'd do around here, seeing as how the junkyards aren't very nice...

yep ther junk yard is a great place to find em. the place i go charges way too much so i just lied and said they were stupid emissions sensors and they charged me 6 bucks for 2 of em. i just sent em to a fellow board first gener in waco though otherwise you coulda had em. seems like these things are goin out on quite a few cars lately, i guess i'll pick up all the ones i see next time i go.

Junkyards are the way to go. I think I'm up to 7 ignitors, only 3 that I'm dead sure work. 2 on the new engine, and 2 i found in a junkyard 2 days ago.

Places I went only charged like 5 bucks, didn't ask what they were either.

P.S. I absolutely love junkyards now, just recently picked up louvers for 15 bucks =].

Oh yea, if you can't find any ignitors in the yards shoot me a PM.

MIKE-P-28 06-27-02 04:15 PM

I pick em up at Glisson's U Pull it, for .50 cents each :)

I dont have any right now, but usually they are good :)

Nick-7 06-27-02 06:40 PM

I am going to try and go to the junkyard tomorrow and see if I can get some, but I am still wondering if a second gen's igniter will work or an earlier model rex.

thanks

Nick

I just sent you a pm.

RACavanaugh 06-27-02 11:41 PM

Dont know if this will help, but you could pick up a rebuilt dizzy that has two new (or at least good) ignitors for about $200.00. Then you keep your good ignitors when you turn in the core!!! Cheap ignitors!

etherhuffer 06-28-02 12:40 AM

Anyone wearing long socks pays very little for ignitors. Change to MSD and then you only need one ignitor!

pmartin 06-28-02 08:49 AM

How does one test and igniter to verify if it is good?

pmartin 06-28-02 08:51 AM

Gads! That shoud have been "an igniter".

The haynes manual tells exactly how to check the ignitors If you have the manual there is a diagram of a light bulb tester on page 283.

If you don't have the manual let me know

mwpayne 06-28-02 09:46 AM

What's the symptoms of a bad ignitor? I have no problems yet, but it sounds like I should have a couple on hand. Is this a problem area? I have an 85 12A.

Nick-7 06-28-02 01:18 PM

I don't know if the igniters slowly go bad or if they just go out. Mine I think just went out. I was driving my car home and it kept dying until it wouldn't start again. I am going to try and make the testing thing today and I will post If they are actually bad.

pmartin 06-28-02 05:58 PM

Nick-7,

I found it in the FSM, page 5-37. It has a diagram of a test ciruit with a switch and a test bulb. Am assuming it's the same in the Haynes.

Yeah, I wouldnt pick them up if I didnt make a few extra dollars on them :) But still have to factor in finders fee too :D

The stupid junkyard around here wants $75 for one ignitor! I just checked today. Ridiculous. They also wanted $48 for an electric fan. These people stink. Anyone with access to a cheap one who would be willing to ship it to me would be greatly appreciated.

Nick-7 06-30-02 04:52 PM

Yeah I went to the junkyard yesterday to check prices and he wants 100 bucks for half of a distributer and he wouldn't even let me buy the igniters.
I would have loved to buy the rex in the junk yard for parts it was great.

If anyone has any extra igniters and is willing to sell them please pm me.

I just picked up an igniter module, not the igniter box, at O'Reilly's Auto Parts for about $25, exact fit for my 1980 RX7. The other module was good so I didn't need both.

Jeff20B 11-19-18 09:13 AM

It's weird to see 06-30-02 and 11-19-18 in the same thread.

WankelWonk 11-19-18 09:41 AM

I just had to replace an igniter box for a 1980 RX7 so in looking for one I ran across the modules and had previously understood they were pricey. Just documenting for others potential future use. You are right, a 16 year gap in the message thread! :)

Wow, back in 2002 you could buy parts from Mazda, and there were first gens in junkyards. My Mazda dealership doesn't even have grease seals for the piolet bearings, and looks at me sideways when I ask for rotary specific items.

So Oreillys is stocking J-109's? I still use them for my trailing system.

Mazda actually still has tons of stuff, the trouble is that Mazda USA's new parts catalog only goes back to 1986, so they have a bunch of parts that are not in a catalog anymore(!) its also flash based which goes away next year, so its a big

i did check the ignitor, and i want to say Mazda can get it but didn't have any, and the after market is looking pretty much NLA.

i wonder if anyone has checked to see if the chip/transistor was available? i can't imagine its that exotic
