Idle issue - dash pot problem?
 

Good morning-thanks in advance for all of the help and patience that you showed me as I try to get this 1979 sort it out. The latest challenge is that the car does not want to idle if I remove my foot from the gas suddenly. If I ease it down very deliberately it will hold an idol, but if I just lift my foot off the gas like I'm coming to a stop it will die.

When I was looking at my oil leak issues I noticed that the dash pot plunger is not moving freeway and I'm wondering if that is a leading candidate.

The piston I'm referring to here is the one that the pliers are touching, it does not move freely and will stick in a compressed position. In other words, when the piston is pushed up it does not return back down unless you give it a couple minutes.

I did try spraying some carb cleaner on it and as far as I can tell it does not have any grit or obstructions that are preventing it from moving.

I know this is a response people hate to hear, but have you checked for any vacuum leaks? A lot of the time poor/no idle conditions are created by vacuum leaks.

Let me double check with carb cleaner while running and see, but I don't believe so. If I had a vacuum leak I wouldn't expect to see the difference in behavior when I let off the throttle as opposed to gently easing it off.
