Idle To High
 

When I bought this 83 rx7 it wouldnt idle right kept shutting off when I stopped at lights.
now when I fuck with timing its got to be at 1200 to 1300
rpms to stay running any ideas what may be wrong?

have you checked for vacuum leaks?

How did you time it? My bet would be your idle mixture/speed settings or vacuum leak...

Are you sure you're adjusting the idle screw, and not the mixture screw?

you need to find the idle screw on the carb. it is the screw closest to the rear of the carb. turning clockwise adjuts idle up. check for vaccume leaks.

ok the idle screw if im looking at right one has some sort of metal cap over it that i cant remove is tyhat the one?

plastic caps only. my screw didnt have a cap though.

i dont we tried everything maybe last asshole who owned it fucke d it up cause we cant get it off

The one with the cap is the fuel/air mixture, best not to mess with this. Deeper and to the right of that, buried in the abiss, is the idle screw. You need a long fucking screw driver to reach this screw and telepathic abilities to actually turn it, good luck. For this reason alone, I hate Mazda engineers. But anyway, as brianW says, your problem is probably a vacuum leak. I found and fixed three before I could get my 85 GSL to purr like a cat, all the other times my messing with the idle screw was a (xxxxx) waste of time.

Also you can just look around and find one of those little black tubes that isn't doing what it's supposed to do, off the connector, connector broken, no tube anymore, etc, and be sure to check the AV tube that runs from the air cleaner down by the exhaust manifold, this one goes out alot and is hard to find with the carb cleaner trick.

As others have mentioned, you probably have a vacuum leak. The first this thing I'd check is the Anti-afterburn hose. It's just below and behind the carb down by the exhaust manifold. The heat burns it up and will kill kill kill your idle. Check and replace that hose before mess'n around with any adjustments on your carb. Here's a pic what what the hose looks like. Good luck!

Fix the vacuum leaks first. Start engine. Spray carb cleaner all around carb and intake. When idle quality changes, you've sprayed at the leak.

Inittab is right. That AAB to intake mani hose is a very common source of leaks. The hose splits at the elbow right next to the manifold.
