Iddle/carb tuning/backfire problems :P

Ok I know there are probably hundreds of threads about this... The only thing, I don't know what keywords to search under .. tried carb, tuning carb, backfire, bla bla bla .. doesn't quite get me what I want lol

Thus said, Here's my problem. hadn't started the rex in a few months .. finally got it going, wouldn't idle and would stall if I let it drop passed 2k RPM ... That and after 10 minutes of running, my RB headers were starting to glow red ... SO , we thought hmm ... running either WAY too lean, or WAY too rich. Hygrade rebuild kits run at 40$ canadian here so, what the hell ! So we rebuilt the carb, not too many problems there, (you guys should see it it's gorgious now :P loll ) and I er-installed it on the car.

NOW FOR THE PROBLEMS :

The car, for some odd reason, actually started RIGHT AWAY :|. Now you see , usually people would find this normal, but all you RX-7 owners know that when your car's been sitting arround a while, and you just rebuilt the carb, or you just did ANY type of work on it, it NEVER starts without a fight :P ANYWAYS ... it reved up to 4500 RPM without me touching the peddle .. Quickly found out the linkages were stuck so fixed that in a second ...

The thing is, it's still not iddling properly ... I give it gas, and it stalls under 2k again, and still backfires, mid you, alot less than before but still ... Could you guys help me ?? Is it too lean ?? too rich ??? what should I do turn the right bolt clockwise ?? conter ?? left one ?? it's just that ... I'd like somebody's opinion who's had this sort of problem before. What did you do ?? What should I try ?? I'm a very patient guy so spending 3-4 hours trying to tune doesn't bother me .. I just wanna know where I should start lol

Once again, Thanks alot guys !!
This community is a life saver !!!! I wouldn't be wearing my "Got rotary" t-shirt with such pride if it wasn't for you ! :P

Eric.

Have you checked timing?

Checked for vacuum leaks?

I think you should check this out for sure, I have the same problems and I just recently figured out I had a blown ignitor... So for a whole year I was running off 2 plugs.

Trust me, it sucked... I can now say though I now how to press all 3 peddles at once coming to a stop giving it gas so it doesnt stall, holding the clutch in and pressing the brake.... This is probally a big saftey issue... Anyways im off topic. But hook a timing light up and look for spark, if thats not it maybe look for some vacuum leaks, another common problem...

I had this same problem in my car. The carb created a vacuum leak, ask me how.. i Have no idea. But started it, idled very high and glowing red headers. Tightened a line that I "thought" was loose and it went away. It was the one that sucks in the hot air from the header. ON my holley.

i had that same problem w mine a few months back. it turned out to be jets. they were dirty as F*#K!!

The_Dude 03-17-05 07:15 PM

Hmm ... We can scratch dirty jets off the list, cuz I just rebuilt the carb so it's all new/clean ... vacume leaks is a MAJOR possibility, due to the fact that I just removed the rats nest loll I'll check that out !!! keep the help comming guys ! :)

looks like we have a wiener!

yea, timing possibly. check that first as it's the easiest. then get some carb cleaner or something equal and spray around the intake area while it's running, if the idle changes at all then there's a leak. good luck.

Hmmm ... ok .. something to add lol ... got it to start, and Iddle without me having to give it gas ... it still backfires, and the headers become glowing red within like 5 minutes lol ... NE body seen this before ??

Fixed ??

Did you finally get the car fixed...figured it out ????
