im planning on building a beast.....and i need traction, how?

ive got the widest tires i think.... (that can fit the stock rims) they're 205/50

new rims, then wiiiiiiiiiderrrrr tires. 275 series. :D make sure you have a good rear end w/ lsd. umm..... SLICKS. hahaha

Fender flares and bigger meats. One of the few (not so) obvious shortcomings of the 1st generation RX-7 is it's lack of room in the fender wells.
Obviously, a trick suspension will do wonders. G-Force engineering if you're serious and don't mind spending as much on suspension as the whole car is worth. It'll handle like creeeezzy.

Drag Radials. I run 235's on 15 inch rims in the rear.

I have NO problem with traction. (Unless I want to :D )

Get the stickiest tires you can afford. sticky is your friend......

You can cram 9" wide wheels with 245s in the back if you get the right offset wheels,even without a widebody or flares.
My 17X9 rears have a lot of offset and just barely scrub the inside wall of the fenderwell when I pull diagonal into my driveway.The outer edge isnt even close to the fender.Its furthur in than my old Centerlines,which fit under the stock fenders easily.Im gonna replace them with some 17X10s soon with more dish to push them out,and 265 or 275 tires.The 245s still arent enough meat to hold 1st and 2nd when the power comes on..........

What's the offset of those steve? You're running spacers too aren't you?

I'm going to deviate from the popular wisom of bigger tyres and suggest improving your driver gasket. Go to some AutoX, drag, TSD rally, and open-lapping events. Any event where you can get an instructor to ride along is better. Learn exactly how far you can push your car. Regardless of how much of a beast you have, how much meat you got sticking to the tarmac, and how well built and tuned your suspension is; knowing the limits of yourself and your car will help you keep your power planted and the back wheels behind the front ones.

I've got 225s in the rear and my traction is radical. I dropped it at 4300 at I took off like a bat outta hell.

I'm running Komho (sp?) 712's : 225/50/16 out back and they hold the power I'm putting down suprisingly very well. Other I've talked with that have the 712's are also very impressed at the amount of grip.

Im not gonna argue on that one.You are correct 100%,the driver is the #1 component.Regardless of tire size or HP,on a road or autoX course,your gonna reach your limits of traction,so smart driving is imperative.

In my case (and most others with high torque engines) its a matter of simply being able to put all the HP down in a straight line.No turns,no oversteer,no body roll......just simply,I dont have enough weight or contact patch to grip the road under full power,in a straight line.Not that Im a drag racer,far from it.But with sketchy traction in a straight line already,putting power down while turning is almost impossible,and scary!:-)
My Falken FK451's are damn good street tires,better grip than any of my old tires.But theres just too much torque.My only alternatives are wider or stickier.Since my car is a daily driver,gumballs arent an option,so wider it is....along with a switch to a GSL 3.909 LSD after the 20B swap.The SE 4.10 is giving too much advantage to the wheels,making 1st go by WAY to quickly.

My rears are 245/35-17 and 17X9 with about 37MM offset.All the deep dish 10-15MM offset wheels were 5 lug.15MM HR spacers push them out enough to look good,but theres still some room there.Heres the rears before the spacers.....

The fronts are 225/35-17 and 17X8 with 34MM offset,again all the deepdish wheels were 5 lug.They have spacers right now too,but when the rears get upgraded,the 17X9's and 245's are going up front to really fill things out.Hers the current fronts with spacers......

Wow, seeing this thread makes me think about the traction problems I will have when I put my beast engine in. Hell, I only have exhaust and other small "upgrades" and I can get the back end to slide sideways a little while shifting to second. I even have 205/60R13's in the rear. Not the best tire (BFG Radial T/A), but I couldn't beat the deal I got on them.

But I can still break 'em with a stock 12a, headers and mikuni. 245/50/R15 on 15X10 Epsilon 3 piece wheels. Need to put the widebody kit on this winter.

Since I lowered the car I can barely get my finger in-between the tire and fender lip. So they sit in a stack at the door to remind me to get something done.

dude that has some serious south of the borderflaver. now all you need are some curb feelers. and some fuzzy dice, and those hanggy ball thingies that go around the interior

Those are the wheels that went with the old Mariah widebody kits.
