I replaced my distributer and now I think I messed up the timing?
 

Hey guys I pulled my distributor off and put a newer one in that the guy gave me when he sold me the car I put it back in what I thought was the right way but I may be a few cogs off or even more than that. I've never done a distributor before and I don't know how the F to put it back in the right spot. So guys what do I gotta do to line it back up again. I know that you gotta turn the cap while its running but I've messes it up so far that its not even wanting to fire any more. Maybe its my spark plugs? please Help or send me a link to another post that has pictures how to do it etc.

1) use a 19mm socket to carefully rotate the main e-shaft pulley in the proper direction until the lead (yellow) timing mark is exactly lined up with the indicating pin on the front cover.

2) rotate the gear on the distributor until the stamped-in dimple on the gear lines up with the alignment ridge on the dizzy body.

3) carefully aim the dizzy down the hole with the holding plate pretty much in the same position as it was when it came out of the car. Dont scrape the sides as this may rotate the gear out of position.

4) as you go in, you'll see the top of the shaft rotate a few degrees as the gears mesh, and you'll feel a 'bump' to get over as the o-ring slides into the bore. Keep everything straight and just evenly press down til the holding plate is flush on top the front cover boss.

5) loosely clamp the dizz in place with the nut.

If everything went right, one arm of the reluctor (the four-pointed star wheel up top) in the dizzy should be damn near perfectly lined up with the lead pickup coil core. If its off by more than a couple tenths of an inch, pull the dizzy back out, line the gear back up, and try again. It can sometimes take a couple 'stabs' before things mesh properly.

Hook up your wiring, start the car, let it warm to idle, then adjust the leading and trailing timing with a timing light.

Thanks guys, I do have a manual but all it showed was how to time it with a timer but I could of been looking in the wrong place. Thank you so much!!! :)
