I passed emissions Have you?
 

They started emission testing in Austin Texas so we're new to this law.

Monday the 14th I finally got a signature I needed to register my 84 gsl-se after 4 months in my posession, cost me 169.00 but was worth it. Tuesday I had to fix a bad catalytic converter, a few hours and 300.00 later had -3 +1 converters installed. Then the big day. Wednesday, got up made sure everything was right high beams wern't working so I took off the plastic around the colum and beat on the switch until they did. Finally after I let my rx-7 warm up I went down the street to the inspection place, paid my dues and sat in line. Two were ahead of me, both were late models so passed with flying colors. Then mine was up, he hop's in starts it up checks a few things behind the wheel and pulls right into the shop skipping the test drive. He checks the lights and one of the healights didnt come on so I walked up and tapped on it and lit right up. Then he checks everything else and looked good. He hooks the rpm tool on the ignition wire and got a reading of 1600 rpm on the monitor and said, "if the car is idling that high you wont pass." so i looked at it and said "you have it on the wrong wire." so he checks it and realized he put it on a coil wire and fixed his mistake then it read 840. He Dreadfully probed the exhaust and stated "this is the end for you." (I made that up) then began the test. He reved it up to 2500 for 80 seconds then droped it down to idle for another 80 seconds I was almost certain I would fail. The reading on the monitor would prove my fate.

Passed! With 171,000 miles on oringal engine

I live in Tarrant county and we've been doing emissions testing for many years now. A properly tuned RX-7 with a working cat will pass emissions with no problems what soever. My GSL-SE (when it was street legal) passed with emissions cleaner than the Honda Accord that came in right next to me when it was last smogged in 1999. I still have that test sheet somewhere. I should probably frame it. :)

No emissions up here, so ya my car is kinda toxic to those behind me. And yes i do get complaints from ppl behind me esp. if they are on bikes.

Haven't passed, here in Austin as well, and, well, haven't even tried to pass....really no use in trying with no cats. Still not sure what to do.

It really helps if you know someone who owns a shop :)

they have waivers if you spend a certain amount of money and it still doesn't pass. something like $250, but depends on the year of the car. you could always keep a 2nd exhuast system with cats and just change it out every year.

the state is really cracking down on illegal stickers and inspectors, so i'd avoid that if possible.

My 84SE (192k miles) passes every 2 years, no problems.

It probably helps that I remove the stock exhaust system 11.5 months out of the year and the RB exhaust system is on there 99% of the time!

I figure these cats won't last forever, especially if I keep driving the car with them on it. So, I only mount the cats before I head off to the testing center. It's worked great for the last 6-7 years, so why change now...?

And here in Houston, DPS has emission trucks parked on the highway on-ramps. Somehow with road side sensors they can detect if you're a big polluter and use a camera to snap shot your tags--now that freakin sucks!!!

Yes i did..... and it was California emissions (the bastard of all emission testing)

Just got mine inspected 5 days ago and passed. Havent heard anything about it in san antonio.

My car never passes. (I live in L.A.). So every two years I have to slap on the cheapest Cat I can find.

i dnt even have to take any test

Smog compliance doesnt mean you have to sacrifice power.Gone are the 70s and 80s people,weve got smallblocks now making 400+ factory HP with exhaust clean enough that you could back your tailpipe up to your garden and feed/water your plants with it.Modern cats are free flowing and air pumps(the few that are left) only suck 1-2 HP at the most.
And your right dfwrx7,a well running rotary will pass EASILY.My old 12A used to put out about 10-12PPM of HC out of what?,150PPM allowable!!Thats pretty damn clean,and NoX isnt ever an issue unless your mixture/timing is horrendeously off.
My current TII setup passes easily too, in the 30-40PPM range,even with a streetport! All I have to do is reinstall the precat to pass the visual portion of the test.The main cat (Bonez) does 99% of the work however.
