Well in my series of blown up stuff I'll add this in there.

Excellent failure Sam! One to be proud of for sure. What is it with you and gears? :)

Good question! First the transmission, then the rear end, now the engine ... any more gears that I'm missing here to rip out lol?

The transmission has been fixed with the Miata guts, the rear end also received the miata treatment with a torsen diff, is there a miata stationary gear and available?

I do drive the hell out of my car, with the way its driven at the track plus the daily driven abuse, that motor should be pulled and refreshed like a race engine every other weekend :D

Wow Sam! Nice work!

I should have an extra front stationary gear laying around if you need it.... it's yours if you pay shipping.

I've got a good used rotor housing too if you need one.

rwatson5651 04-20-11 08:41 AM

Was that a hardened gear?

RotoricanNY 04-20-11 02:11 PM

holy crap, epic failure indeed!

snivley whiplash 04-20-11 06:45 PM

man that blowed up real good. I think you have ran out of gears to break now.

Doubt it, not sure if there's any real way of telling with it looking like that neither.

diabolical1 04-21-11 04:06 AM

maybe some temporary oil starvation condition to the front?

the bearing IS totally f-ed up....

diabolical1 04-21-11 12:16 PM

yeah, that was actually just an add-on to the thought i posted in his original thread. i was thinking that for whatever reason, there was some pre-existing fracture to the gear and maybe some kind of transient oil starvation caused e-shaft contact which opened the crack and voila ... the spinning rotor did the rest. i don't know, that's my attempt at being a modern-day Columbo. :)

yes you're right, we don't know sams whereabouts on the night of the 18th [rubs stuble on chin] hmmm

diabolical1 04-21-11 12:48 PM

hmmm, indeed .... :D

dj55b 04-22-11 06:03 PM

Not sure if oil starvation was in the equation, was just in straight line, no turn or anything.

the gear? or the oil?

orion84gsl 04-22-11 07:53 PM

Well since you broke it now you can make it better. P-port time.

Kentetsu 04-23-11 12:03 AM

Well get it back together so you can go to the Mitty with us! :)

Jeff20B 04-23-11 12:37 AM

That rotor was a hungry man chicken dinner!

trochoid 04-24-11 08:27 AM

If the engine stopped right after it happened, then the bearing siezed. That's way too much bearing wear to occur from just the gear failure. Nicely done. Be thankful it didn't happen on a high speed sweeper.
