hvac bulbs?
Hello everyone,
A couple of bulbs in my hvac control are burnt out (84 gsl-se). Went to Napa, and they didn't have them, nor were they willing to get into the old books to find it. I've searched on the forum and could not find anything. These are not the same as instrument cluster bulbs. They are much smaller and seem to come as a bulb and socket assembly. Autozone doesn't list them either. Anyone have an info on these bulbs/sockets? Thanks in advance! |
Have a pic of bulb/socket? If bulbs behind rotary temp control and fan speed switch, they are#74 bulbs and are replaceable. They are a smaller version of a push in #194 bulb.
|
I'll see if I can get a pic later. These bulbs are even smaller that the two bulbs that light up the fan switch and hot/cold switch. They are the same size in girth but are shorter because there isn't that much depth where they go into the hvac control housing. I couldn't get a number off the bulb.

Here are a couple of pics. As you can see the bulb and socket I am referring to is a bit smaller than the two hvac knob light bulbs. Actually, the girth of the bulb is not even the same. Also, as you can see, the bottom of the socket is cross-tipped for a screwdriver to get them out. When the voltage regulator goes in the alt, it blows out almost every bulb. I replaced every bulb except these. Let me know your thoughts.

I will look in my stash tomorrow when home. Can you take a pic of bulb holder from top down,as in overhead? Does the bulb appear to be removable, have you tried to remove it?

Sure thing. See pics. It doesn't seem that the bulbs come out, at least not without crushing them.
thanks! |
Have you tried hitting up the parts desk at the local Mazda dealer?
|
I've looked thru my stash of dash lamps and bulbholders, have several of the larger of the two pictured, but none of the mode button bulbholders. Don't think i ever replaced any of these. Maybe possible to find another logicon for sale in classifieds here that someone removed when stripping interior...

Pm j9fd3s,i believe he worked in parts for Mazda for sometime. He may be able to find a part# for the bulb/holder to help you in your search. Iv'e known him to come up with some obscure part #s in the past.

Thank you all for taking your time to help. I finally found a place that sells the bulb/socket assembly that I need. See link below. Unfortunately, they are out of stock.

It would open up the availability if you separate the bulb from the base and find close one. The bulbs appear to be pigtailed, unwind that, remove the bulb, keep the base.
If you really get desperate, you could make a custom LED from the strip type available on Amazon ( ). I built some to replace the larger instrument cluster bulbs. One caveat, with raw LEDs you need to consider the polarity of the socket. https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generati.../#post12116614 |
Thanks for the ideas. I would be happy with just the bulb, but all the ones I'vr tried are too long and bottom out in the housing. I tried, 31, 71, 74, etc.

Something like this

I used something like this in mine.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...fc9ea871fd.jpg Luckily all the bulb holders were fine. Aus spec s3, might be a different arrangement to the North American cars. No need for resistors. But in my Nissan pickup i had to actually get the bulbs and holders for the dash lights from the Dealership as it was an odd size wedge bulb and i think one of the holders broke too IIRC. Its the type of thing i guess most manufactures would have shitloads of stored away somewhere. |

It is a wire terminal base bulb..........like how you replace a Christmas tree light bulb. It has the two long wires on the end that have to go through the two small holes in the base. I called the Mazda dealer.........they have no clue. Must be the generation we live in, lol! Anyway, I probably can get the bulbs through bulbtown.com, but it's like a needle in haystack. There are no numbers at all on the factory bulbs. I did take a good working bulb and put each wire end to each side of the socket base where the contacts are on the climate control and got nothing. I know that the lights for each selector (vent, bi-level, heat, def, etc) only light up when you press that button. Otherwise all of them would be lit up all the time. What I don't understand is what triggers that light to come on when you press that button? I'm asking because it appears that I have more than a bulb problem. Hope this all makes sense, lol! Thanks! |
I just purchased a 1983 GS and I am on the same search. I believe the bulbs are either 3.4W 0000-11-0194 or 1.4w 0000-11-0074 which can be ordered on https://www.tascaparts.com/. I am in the process of ordering them to test it out. Will let you know.

Post some pics of what you're trying to replace. The last three numbers in parts sequence denote what type of bulbs they are. The 1st is a #194,used in side marker lamps on 1st gens. The 2nd is #74 and is used in some of dash illumination lamps on 1st gens, both are readily available in most auto parts stores-even Walmart. In pics, the larger bulb is the 194.

They're just generic wedge bulbs, eg; T5,T6

You can purchase a socket that fits perfect, but unless you can find a super-shallow wedge type bulb, it won't work. As stated before, the bulbs will bottom out in the housing of the climate control unit before making contact with the mating surface. I have yet to find a wedge bulb that is shorter than a 74 bulb. That's probably why Mazda went with a wire terminal bulb and socket, which opens up the availablitity for much shorter bulbs. Anyway, a solution I found is to go with the upgraded LED socket/bulb assembly. They fit just like the stock ones. I got mine from superbrightled.com. It's a 5mm (T-1) 3/4. |

The 2nd is #74
I THINK #73s are the right fit, but I didn't notice those at AutoZone until I went for the return of the #74s. |
