I was thinking of getting some gauges for my sa (autometer z-series) and was wondering if you guys had any tips on mounting locarions or how to install them. The plan is to put them in place of the cassette player. (see pic). How do you get the old faceplate thing off and how do you mount them? Do you need some sort of metal backing plate?

 

A-pillar... the center console seems pretty popular as well.

 

I have a double pod A pillar mount. I have two Autometer gauges in there, and I plan on putting two more in the center under my Alpine.

 

The only drawback to a-pillar mounts is it attracts the wrong kind of attention. I personally would never have pillar mounts again, because I think that's what attracted the thieves to my FC.

 

yeah, idk about a-pillar mounts. I like the center console because everything looks clean and "built in". IMO, a-pillar just looks tacked on and ricey.

Does anyone have any pics of gauges in the center console?

 

i have the same guage!!! and i have it zip tied to the steering colum...i need some pods and im going to put them on the dash board

 

If you go to an aftermarket radio, you could probably fabricate a holder out of MDF and ABS plastic and put it where your cassette player is.

 

I've got them in the center console and A-pilar.

Probably looks a little more generic in person...things like that always do...but it's not going to stop me from doing it myself with my FC...lol. Ill be using 52mm guages, though, because I'm poor...

 

I have my fuel press gauge under my stereo and the way the panel is it's gonna be hard to mount another gauge there. It comes apart, the stereo install it's like a rectangular panel and is kinda weird looking. I'm going to buy a new flat one piece rectangular piece of plastic and drill 52mm holes to mount my two gauges.

 

Well, I have to disagree about the a pillar mount. Mine is a custom replacement for the trim piece. It is not a dual pod that attaches to the a pillar. It is the same factory piece with the pods molded in to it.
As far as attention goes, I live in a good neighborhood, and my car is garaged. I don't drive my RX in to places like that. Of course it helps that I have four RX's to choose from when I drive.

 

Need minor adjustment on the temp control area.

 

I Made a custom Fiberglass dual a-pillar gauge pod, with a tweeter molded into the top. I also have 3 gauges under the mirror adjuster, it fit pretty well. I'm really happy with the a-piller and it only took about 4-5 hours of work.

I have been working with Akira on first gen stuff. THis is made out of acrylic I think. We still have to do minor adjustments on the temp sliders and the blower switch. However, he has been busy in school and the test car is about 1 hr away from me. 84-85 are available for now.

 

A-pillar mounts limit the drivers vision in a very important area - the car manufacturers make that pillar as thin as humanly possible for a reason.

And if that weren't enough - they are nice and ricey.

 

i got one of those cheapo multi gauges from NAPA, oil pressure, water temp and volt meter and stuffed it under my CD deck.

i think i used it more as a filler for the gaping hole in the console. however it is handy when i need it.
