how strong is the stock differential.
 

I have started on project "blown 82"

I have on order a turbo II engine and tranny,
the engine should make near 300 hp and I am worried about grenading the diff.

Are there ways to make it stonger (ie racing beat gears) , and I hear there are conversion kits for 9 inch ford diff.

What do you think.

i remember Cartech built a car (think it was a 79), they put an 85 rear in it, and they were running over 400HP in it! i believe the tranny would be more likely to go than the rear (because they used a Cosmo tranny in it or something) and since you said you're using a T2 tranny, there shouldn't be a problem.
but i think the rears are a lot stronger than most people think. just make sure you choose your flywheel/clutch setup wisely ...

rice racing has almost 600 flywheel HP with a series 2 rearend.

meanwhile i broke my S1 diff by doing a loooong one wheel peel :)

Rice Racings diff housing is S2 but his center is a genuine Mazda Racing item. Oh, he cracked the housing recently too.

But... My S2 diff is still going strongish (noisily) I'm not entirely sure how much power i'm putting down though. I just take care of it. I will eventually go to a Ford 9" for some 1/4 mile action. :D

glad to hear it, all I need to do now is find a gsl rear or put a lsd in mine.

what about a differencial off a nissan pick-up? i hear that can hold some power and plus i have seen a lot guys running it at the track, and i also hear the ford 9 inch is good to about 450 horses or something, i might have heard wrong though

I was around those days when Cartech did that and they did have gear problems.

I had gear problems with a bridge ported 13b and solved it with MazdaComp gears and yes it was set up correctly.

I am building a new bridgy and am going with MazdaComp gears again with a Guru Torson rear end.

I see quite a few of the TII/cosmo swaps going with a ford 9" rear. Doesn't that add a lot of weight? I mean those things are pretty solid. Has anyone ever bothered putting a ford 9" on a regular FB? you know just for the hell of it?

I had the same question :) Guess I'll find out... Wonder if I have a Driveshaft made for mine, will the LSD rear sit in the same place, use the same pinion flange or be swapable to my old one?

I run a 2 piece driveshaft, going into a 'standard' S1 rearend, but upgraded with a Guru Centre, with the floating hub kits, so I could get the billet steel axles. In the class some of the guys did run the hilux/nissan rear-end but are now all going for the same set-up as me due to the strength and weight advantages. This gives me almost the same strength as a 9 inch! The only weak (if you can say that) point then is the actual gears!

So yes, the rearend does sit in the same place, uses the same pinion but is heaps stronger!
