How to set-up LEDs?

I've been wondering about thus and it seems that my suspicions that our cars use the old style bi-metallic flasher units is affirmed. I wanted to upgrade my turn signals and brake lights to LEDs, but I need an electronic flasher unit for that. Does anyone make one that fits our cars? Or will i have to ghetto rig the system with a resistor?:Wconfused

I don't know anyone that has LED's on their first gen. Only the xenon...

Most likely you have to ghetto rig it.

There is a thread I do believe in the archive section that partly addresses this and how to trick the system so you don't get that false alert and your flashes don't go so fast. You might want to search in there.

Correction, I went ahead and did the search for you...

Wrong, there are some people on this site that have converted a lot of bulbs over to LED :rlaugh: noob

I was gonna buy a bunch of those xmas led lights and put em all over rusty for spring break light show at the beach run. For that I think i'll just use one of those cig lighter 110v coverters / adapter. (now that's ghetto lol)

^ yes it is

Heh, I may do that and call it my "Ground FX" Kit... If anyone saw that hella old Saturday Nght Live withe the Daewoo you know the reference! :P

As for KMonto... Thanks, it wasn't under the criteria I was looking for since I wanted to fulley replace the OEM FLasher with an electronic one.. but it looks promising. Will let you guys know if I make any progress in this department... currently I need a new bumper and quarter panels due to a minor miscalculation in my driving. (I slid out and attacked a black iron fence which took my bumper as payment. :wallbash)

Waiting until the rainy weather dies down so the junk yards dry up. Then I will be hunting for a new nose...

Thanks for the help guys, always need it and always appreciate it!

BTW where's Wacky? Its no fun having a new year without poking fun at the reaper! :P

Somone could clean up if they made a nice LED tail lamp replacement system for SA & FB's.

IIRC, Manntis was the one who made a LED panel for both taillamps. I DO remember seeing a thread with those LED panels and I'm 98% sure it was Manntis who did then.

pretty much all the bulbs on our cars can be replaced with LEDS. Just go on ebay with the part number on the bulb and type LED with it. You might have to add an extra resistor pack for the lights so that the stock system doesn't think they're burnt out. The turn signals for example will flash faster on the dash to indicate light burnt out.

I plan on doing a custom tailight LED.

So there's no way to outright replace the old style flasher with a more modern one that doesn't need a high resistance to operate? :wallbash:

i always wanted to convert my rear lights to led's.
it doesnt seem that hard, just gotta measure the resistance and add the correct resistor?
oh well one of these days ill do this.

FWIW I went ahead and bought a set of replacement "bulb" style LEDs off of
http://www.superbrightleds.com/
Spent some $80 for all bulbs plus recommended "japanese" flasher unit replacement.
Results: SUCK
Bulbs W-a-a-a-a-ay too dim. Requires VERY direct view to see them illuminated! (had a BIG semi pull up beside me at an intersection to tell me I "had no brake lights" - this was during the DAY, mind you.)
Flasher didn't work at all, so plugged into stock = too fast flashing.
So:
back to Mr Edison's Tungsten filaments...
;p
Bulbs and flasher for sale if anyone wants to try their luck!
Meanwhile LOTS of new cars have them and they are BRIGHT!! WTF!?

Go to AutoZone and buy the HUGE resistors they sell in the lighting section. This will fix your flashing too fast with the turn signals. Its all you need, no need for the flasher replacement deal.

at advance i was able to get a set of led bulbs to replace my break lights. there not dim at all. i wouldn't mind replacing all my lights with led's . if some one can post a detail way to fix the flasher problem that would be great.

No the LED replacement bulbs for 1156 and 1157 bulbs suck real bad. I put them in the FC when I had it and it's no comparison. Just under normal lights they look fine but there is a very minimal change in brightness to the brakes applied. The LED side markers on the other hand were very nice and bright as fuck
