How much paint does it take?

For those of you who have painted your own 1st gens. How much paint did it take to cover your first gen? Is 2 Quarts enough or would you reccommend more. I don't really want to have paint left over but I REALLY don't want to run short on paint. I've been going to school learning how to paint but I havn't learned how to esstimate how much paint I'll need.

If I recall correctly, when I painted the car shell with Epoxy (Its was a 2 part epoxy to 1 part hardner) it took me about a 1/2 a gallon, because I only bought one can of hardner and needed 2 to finish the whole jug. And that covered the engine bay, inside the car, door inside and outside, hood inside and out, so basically the whole car. So that would be 3/4 of a gallon of material. I bet if you do only all the outside stuff, it would be less than that ... so I would say go ahead and get 2 quarts ... or if you want to play it safe ...you can always get one now and if you run short get more

Forgot to mention, that did 2 coats on everything minus inside the car.

Hey thanks... Yeah I'm doing a one step urathane on the outside that has the clear premixed. I'm going to rattle can the engine bay and the interior. I'll get 2 quarts just to be safe.

I rattle canned the engine bay as well. If I didn't have to redo a few parts 2 qts would have been enough. A few of the little pieces needed to be redone, so I got an additional pint. I did basecoat/clearcoat but the amounts should be about the same.

A lot of it depends on the type of paint. I used nearly 3 qts. of single stage urethane when I painted the widebody. But I also had to paint the hood twice and the kit itself needed more paint than a stock body. Never hurts to have a little extra for mistakes and redos.

always better to have more than not enough if you run out and need to go get more you run the risk of having a slight pigment variance with the next quart..

When I painted my car over the summer, I bought a gallon to make it a sprayable gallon.

This covered all bumpers, door jams, under hood and body. I didn't pull the engine yet though, but I will have to buy more for that.

What color?

Black... cheap and covers well... plus the car is already black... but just needs a new paint job.
