How much louder with RB header?

Stockport 12a, will be getting new carb soon. Straight through 2.5'' full stainless muffler. I would like to just get an RB header, and get a straight pipe(2.25'') made to replace the cats(gutted already) and midpipe. Right now, with the stock manifold, gutted cats, and the muffler with silencer in, it's not too loud at all. How much louder would this make it?

jonfc3s 02-23-03 06:27 PM

loud!

Defprun 02-23-03 06:30 PM

I'll find out in spring.

If I have time this week I will get a vid up of my ride before I tear it down for a bridge port..

The manifold makes it quiet, thats why you can get away with a relatively open system. Put on a header and shes gonna be really loud.

coldy13 02-23-03 07:16 PM

I guess I have to get the presilencer then :(

jammerx7gsl 02-23-03 07:33 PM

i've got the rb header presilencer and the stock muffler. and i cant go past any cop anywhere with out them wanting to pull me over!!! it will make it really loud!! any header without a cat will be very loud!

RotorMotorDriver 02-23-03 07:41 PM

The muffler is what makes it the quietest. I ran mine with the header and straight pipes stock muffler. Too loud. Bought and added pre silencer with stock muffler. Too loud. Bought RB muffler. Sounds NICE now :).

I ran two presilecers (parallel) with a strait through n1. Very loud. But sounded good.

Rotor13B 02-24-03 01:52 AM

Yep, like rotormotordriver said, buy the rb muffler, sounds hella sweet and not too loud.

The RB muffler is too damn expensive. I plan on getting the RB header, using either one or two of These as presilencers, and keeping the muffler I have on the back now. It's fine if it's a little loud, as long as my ears dont start bleeding or cops start being on my ass for it 24/7 then I don't really care.

coldy13 02-24-03 12:28 PM

Damn, can't edit it, oh well. I've decided on what I'll get. RB header, into this then into one of these then into the straight thru muffler I have on there now. That should make it quiet enough for on the street, and it will flow very well.

I have a racing header too. I am not too sure of the brand, but it looks alot like the racing header Racing Beat has been offering. For some reason, it is not that loud on my stock 12a(sounds good on the outside, not much noise inside) But it has a really rusty muffler in the back, don't know if it is stock but seems it is. And there has a presilencer or cat like "can" in the midsection of the pipe.

Someday, I will go to put on a custom made header back system. Wondering if a presilencer is really needed for the noise? I am planning to use a Sebring straight thru muffler w/ two perforated Sebring tips.

Tell us how many blocks they last. Seriously, if there not rotary approved they probably won't last very long.:(

My experience is similar to the other guys. The RB header, presilencer combo, with the stock muffler (that was very quiet with the stock exhaust) was *extremely, intollerably* loud. As in, I drove 4 hours to a rock concert one night, and the rock concert was a relief, I could hardly hear it lol. It really is just that loud. It's WAY louder than all those riced out Honda's, etc, that you might be thinking it will sound like.

I'm not sure how good other mufflers are, but the stock muffler, or anything like it, is nowhere near good enough to be able to think straight, hear the stereo, or avoid being pulled over all the time. I used to shut my car off when I'd drive by cops, and my neighbors used to complain that I was waking them up at night all the time.

So I'd avoid that combo, it's louder than you think!

I used to have a stock muffler, but with the gutted cats, it became victim to a backfire :) It actually exploded out a whole side of the muffler, split the seam, and tore a hole the entire length of the muffler. The top and bottom of the hole was about 10'' apart. Heat shield had to be hammered back in place to get it off the tire, got blasted so out of shpe it was sitting on top of the tire.

The muffler I'm running now isn't rated for a rotary. It's just a full stainless cheapo I bought off ebay(from meganracing.com). Been working great for 8 months now. As long as the muffler is full stainless, I think it'll last just fine. The straight thru designs won't quiet that much, but if I'm running 1 as a presilencer, the spiral presilencer, and a straight thru muffler(with silencer), it should be okay on noise(I hope).

Manntis 02-24-03 10:31 PM

thing is, the RB muffler is probably the last muffler you'll ever buy for that car. I've heard they laaaaaaaast. (hope so, too, as i have one)

The header/ps/muffler combo sounds great! a low, mellow tone at idle and low speed, and a nice spirited 'angry hornet' sound at suitable RX-7 velocities :)

I recommend, Dr. Jones! I very, very recommend.

i have a RB header going to straight custom 2 1/4" piping, no cats, to a tsudo straight through muffler. it sounds pretty nice, but oh god it's loud! i'm thinking about adding a presilencer or something, i just don't want to lose any hp, just from doing this exhaust combo, i went from stock 80 or so hp to the wheels to 108 rwhp! OH YES. hahahahaha

Manntis 02-24-03 10:51 PM

I don't think the presilencer eats up much horsepower. The header/ps/muffler combo is supposed to add 25/30hp as it is, which is within the 28 hp gain you experienced without the ps.

FB II 02-24-03 10:58 PM

AWESOME, but do they help out that much? i mean, for 130 scrilla, is it worth it? is there any other way of making some "silencer" cause i'm on a budget buying all my turbo pieces, but i want my car to quiet down so i can hear my music. i got my custom piping done for 40 bucks (hook up). any other silencers out there that will work that don't cost as much as a high flow mufller? hahaha, thanks for the info!

A problem is that rotary exhaust gases are very very hot and a 'cheap' system quickly falls apart.

You can make your own presilencer very cheaply by finding "glass pack" mufflers that use a perforated pipe, not louvered. Cut the ends and pack with some thin sworf(lathe shavings) of stainless. It should be about the same weight as flat band metal pot scrubbers. Try to make a 16-18" long presilencer if you can.

I was told by Pineapple Racing that Walker mufflers are very good for the price.

Make the tail pipe as long as possible as it helps with sound levels. Make the primaries as long as possible as it helps with the power.

I was told by many racers Borla XR1 is the shit
