how much does a totally gutted 1st gen wiegh?
Im looking for some wieghts of totally gutted out 1st gens.
can you get down below 2000 pounds? |
If you rip out the ac, air pump, power steering, carpet, sound deadening, the other seat, and anything else that the car dosen't need to run im sure you can get around 2000 if not lighter.
|
sure.
|
I rolled my old 81 across a truck scale once.
With the airpump, stock cats, stock interior, me, 1/4 tank of gas, and 2 10's and 2 amps in it it was 2440 lbs. |
Depends on how much you like your dashboard or not :)
|
dash can go too. im talking everything you can take off.
|
id think you would definetly be able to taek it under 2 grand if you are willing to go that far :]
|
Does it matter if you also have no doors and no glass? :)
|
yeah, the hatch really takes up a lot of weight...
oh, and if you remove the engine, and tranny, that really gets the weight down... Jeff |
I tried to pick up one of those live axles from an '84 GSL once. It was heavy. Remove it and you'll save plenty. :)
|
You'll have to remove the gas tank when you do that too :)
|
I bet if one was to remove everything but the basic body(parts that don't come off without special equipment(torch) and leave on all the metal, no plastic. I'm talking all the stuff: engine, tranny, ALL interior, rearend, etc, etc. I'm SURE the uni-body by itself is not much more then 600-700lbs. OFcourse you need things like steering, seat, tranny, doors, engine, wheels, rearend, etc, etc.
|
I know of road racers that are down to ~2000 lbs. with wide body kits.
But it is hard to get below 2000lbs... -Zach |
talk to GT racers.. we're talking ditch the dash, ditch all interior (lightest seat possible), fiberglass body panels, ditch glass & replace with lighter if possible, ditch doors if possible (they're HEAVY).. you get the idea.

It is easy to get below 2k!! I am at 1825 with a wide body kit. Here are a few sneak peaks of it tore back down.
http://members.cardomain.com/7heaven You have to be willing to take everything you absolutly dont need! My header is not RB 14lbs.....it is a stainless unit at 7lbs. My hood is a fiberglass unit I am working on producing, it only weighs 9lbs. I have removed the water pump and run a remote unit, it saves 5lbs. There is no glass in my car, it is all 1/8" lexan. on and on and on and on |
How much does the carbon fiber version weigh? Probably not worth it at all for the difference in weight...unless you're looking for strength and flexability?

Me and 3 other guys didn't have too much trouble picking a shell (still had doors and a bunch of wire) off jack stands and setting in on a trailer.

im hoping to get my car down to around the 950kg with out me in it,
to do this i have, aliminium dash with autometer ultra light auages, velo race seats, fibreglass bonnet, no sound stuff on the car at all, lexan side windows, everything removed that is not required, Jap doors with out side intrusion bars things i have against me, 9" diff TII motor and box, with large turbo and cooler, 8 point roll cage. i have some pics if you want to see them let me know and ill post em up. |
Hey 1st7heaven, what type of wheels are those in your old car pic?
|
what year and model is the leightest? or has the most potenal?
|
950kg is about 2,000 lbs, so it should be pretty easy.
|
defprun,
There is really no measureable weight savings in the carbon vs. the fiberglass, just strength. Rotor13b, Those are 13x8 Panasports, I now have 16x10 Revolutions. |
That tri-link looks nice. I'm jealous :)
|
Thanks!
The set up is very functional but very basic. As you can see it is made out of just carbon steel tubing and metal plate. I will have to say, though, Jim at G-force has done his home work on these and also has proved the functionality road racing. |
