how make an engine emission legal
 

how do you make a rotary emissio ns legal? is it pretty much just airpump/thermal reactor plus a cat? im wondeing what it would take to make say... a 12a streetport emission legal.

you leave it alone? every single Rx7 was emissions legal when it was new...

if its a small/normal streetport it should still pass, but a giant one would probably need different carb jetting.

adding overlap between the intake and exhaust ports adds more exhaust gasses to the intake stroke, which needs a richer mixture which increases emissions. leaning the mixture causes misfires, which also increase emissions.

Mazda's strategy over the years has been to decrease the "internal EGR" and to improve the ignition and fuel systems. so the Rx8 has some dwell between the exhaust port closing, and intake opening, and it also has a spark plug that can fire a leaner mixture.

First find out what the emissions inspections are in your county / area. In many parts of the country cars don't need emissions testing after they're 25 years old. If they do it can vary widely from CAT/air pump (visual inspection only... like where I live) or may need a sniffer test too. Check your area's specific guidelines before you waste time and money.

As said, the car would still be legsl if all the owners hadn't thrown away all the stock engine trim.

ok, im just wondering becuase i have a fully streetlegal 12a setup right now, but im wanting to eventually get more power. luckily where i live there is no inspection at all, i just want to know for the future

But seriously why don't you guys run a little propane in your cars to fool the emissions machine? Seems like it'd be a strait forward thing and you could hide all the regulators and whatnot. I mean the emissions gestapo wouldn't know what to make of the rats nest a little more piping and they'd be clueless.

passing the sniffer is the easy part, with all of the equipment these things run really clean, the visual is the hard part
