how high can I actually rev my engine?

Hi, I have an 84 with a cosmo 13b swapped in. It has a racing beat intake manifold, weber 45mm carb, header, and a full exhaust. Well I've had a bunch of people come up to me that used to drive rotaries and they ask me if it's fast and what I've beaten blah blah blah, but they always ask me how high do I let the engine rev. I say that I just let it go to the stock redline and they look at me funny. A lot of them have told me that they rev theirs up to 12000 and how that's the way it should be blah blah blah. But my question to all of you is, will my rotary rev that high and last much longer than a week?

TOTALLY DEPENDS DOOOD! Rebuild??!! Miles on the engine?! commeee onn!!!

Yes, you could rev your engine up to 12000, But I dont think you need too. I think it all depends on who and were you are racing.

You wont make any significant increase in power revving higher then 9K anyways.

MosesX605 01-13-04 07:56 PM

Yes, you can rev the motor to 12k.

Once.

After the e-shaft flexes enough to contact one of the tips of the rotor into a housing and you need a complete rebuild and two new rotor housings, you'll learn not to pull that BS again.

How the heck would they know if they revved to 12k anyhow? The stock tach only goes to 8k and most aftermarket tachs go to 10k.

A stock port motor doesn't make much power past 7k on the Nikki carb. Even with an aftermarket carb the motor will not be able to flow enough to make power much higher in the revs.

On a 6 port 13b with a stage 2 street port would letn it go to 8k be safe, and is there any power up there?

Steve Shulz 01-13-04 08:19 PM

Guys at Mazdatrix told me about 10K. Ive burried mine a couple of times, maybe 9500 or so. I dont think it should be a habbit. Centifugal force can be a mofo...

should not need to go any higher than 8k, after that not much power is built, and you run a high risk of fouling your motor.

i was under the impression that past 8, your stationary gears will begin to deform (unless they are hardened) or is that only on the 12a's?

coldy13 01-13-04 08:54 PM

Do not go past 8400. At 8500 the apex seals start to chatter and leave marks on the housing. The stock engine is fine up to 8400 though.

85rotarypower 01-13-04 09:05 PM

Also after 8400 rpm, your clutch parts, water pump, and any other acessories will start to deteriorate if they are not specially built parts. I would say 7500-8000 rpm is good. IMO, anything past that is just wasted fuel.

heb09 01-13-04 09:13 PM

12000rpm is just plain stupid. Its just not worth reving it out that hard.

Jon_Valjean 01-13-04 09:15 PM

Unless you've spent a lot of money on the engine, 8500 is the maximum.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I knew that 12k rpms sounded insane.
