How do you mount a 12a front cover on to a 13b

Like the title says I need to mount a 13b into my car and do not have a gsl-se front cover so what do I need to do to get the 12a front cover to work oh this is a S4 13b thanks :bigthumb:

rotary emotions 02-02-05 11:32 AM

use bolts... :D
ok, it's REALLY simple: remove the 13B front cover, put on the 12A, bolt it together, done... Of course, if you used sealant ;)
You'll need a GSL-SE oilpan though. And a special brace (either a modified 12A one, or a RB one)

85MarkRx7 02-02-05 11:54 AM

I know I need the oil pan I was going to modify my 12a brace to work. You see my freind told me the oil passages don't line up and the 12a front cover won't work so now I have to prove him wrong plus the 12a went out and a junkyard 12a is more expensive than an s4 13b lol. Oh and I thought I did not need bolts or sealant I was hoping my strong mental power would hold it together.

It sounds so simple when you don't mention the oil pellet mod and the caution required to keep that bearing in place.

I'm still trying to get all my ducks in a row to transplant an S4 engine into my SE but trying to keep track of all these little gotchas is driving me insane.

85MarkRx7 02-02-05 12:01 PM

Ok that is what I was worried about stupid gotchas. Ok what is the oil pellet mod and and also any advice on keeping the bearing from coming out.

RRTEC 02-02-05 12:22 PM

I had read nothing about HAVING to do the oil pellet mod, when swaping to the 12A front cover..... If this is true then I am fuc@ed and pissed.. I researched the swap for 6 solid months and read nothing of the oil pellet swap being a HAVE TO DO....WTF? Did everyone else leave this out of thier how to's or what? Son of a bit$h someone please clarify. I just put my motor in with the 12A cover....sonobitch.

rotary emotions 02-02-05 01:46 PM

You don't have to do any oil pellet mods, but of course it'd be good time to do so, if you'd like. Swapping front covers really is no big deal. Oil passages WILL line up.

Whizbang 02-02-05 01:50 PM

what is the reason for a 12 front cover on a 13b?

RRTEC 02-02-05 02:04 PM

read my "cronicles of a 12A to 2nd gen 13B swap" it will answer this....^^^^

Jeff20B 02-02-05 02:45 PM

I did a 12A front cover swap onto an S5 engine in December. It already had an aluminum dealy inside the E-shaft. :)

rmarkc 02-02-05 04:50 PM

I didn't mean to alarm anyone by mentioning the oil pellet thing. I probably won't do it when I do my swap. I'll be too busy trying to keep the other eleventy billion things I have to do with my swap straight.

I'm just stressing over my first rotary engine swap, don't mind me.

RRTEC 02-02-05 05:15 PM

LOl...you had me freaking out man...!

It is so that the 13B can be mounted in same mount locations as the 12A. You do not have to use a 12A front cover; an early (front-mounting) 13B front cover would work as well.

If you do not use a "front-mount" front cover, you could fabricate mounts to use the 13B standard center or rear mount points. This is slightly more complicated but allows you to use the 13B engine in its standard configuration with OMP.

vipernicus42 02-02-05 06:27 PM

I thought the oil pellet mod was only a 2nd-gen thing? Or did I completely miss that?

Are you putting an S4 or S5 motor in? Then you should do the thermal pellet, it's as good a time as any... Does the -SE engine have one of those annoying things? I didn't think so.

Jon

Edit: "and I don't have an -SE front cover" should have tipped me off that it wasn't an -SE 13b that you're dropping in. :p:

Sweet I will make it work thanks for your help now I can sleep at night.

this wouldn't even be worth it...

Pretty much all 74-95 engines will accept the very common 81-85 12A front cover which is the exact same part as the 84/85 13B GSL-SE front cover.
get a new oil-passage O-ring and some blue silicone and bolt it all together.

the oil-pellet mod is reccomended, but not required.

Here is a link to an Australian site where a guy details an S5 into Gen 1 transplant.

There are a few paragraphs (and some pictures) regarding grafting the 12A front cover onto the S5 engine.

Incorrect, and for good reason. Im guessing by your post youve never looked at a GSL-SE front cover. Theres two things that make it different from the 12A one. First of all it has the same bolt pattern for the OMP as the s4 FC. The 12a OMP has a different bolt pattern

Secondly, the GSL-SE has a perfect spot for a Turbo oil return cast into it. Its not there on the 12A front cover.

SS124A 02-03-05 04:58 PM

w/e dude,

My point is, people get all hell-bent about using a GSL-SE front cover for a simple S4/S5 13B swap.

to your point, there is no point in using the actual front cover unless you are going to a turbo application.. in which case you can still use the 12A front cover, and put your oil-return from your turbo into the side of the oil-pan. I am not arguing, it is better to allow this to drain to the front cover due to oil-slosh issues.

ANyway, to throw an answer on here stating that I have never looked at one, isn't nice.

you should see my garage floor right now, I have several complete take-out running engines just sitting around in tires.

I try to keep my posts simple and to the point so people know what will work functionally. some people get too overboard on some things.

hornbm 02-03-05 05:24 PM

if you want to retain the use of the 4 outlet OMP, then you have to use the GSl-SE front cover.

So to do the swap right, yes you have to do it that way, unless you are gonna premix

And even for doing a S5 swap, the GSL-SE front cover can be modified to accept the electric OMP, the 12A one cant, or not without a ton of modification
