How do u know if u timing was mess with or igniter are bad?

Hey I got 80 style electronic igintion and I trying to find out if the igniter are bad or the square box? How often does an 80 electronic ignition die? Here is my problem I rebuilt my carb and put back on the car & everything together the way it should. I went driving it and it's like a snail it look like it want to go when u step on it but something is holding it back from moving fast. I knwo it's alot of gas because I removed the carb cover and open all four barrell and all of the four nozzle is flowing gas like crazy. Also when does the trailing igniter kicks in? I unplug the leading igniter and the car start to misfire or starting to shut off, and when I try the trailing igniter nothing happen to the engine? Also I got 2 84 style distributor can I used that on the 80? And is there any special wirring I need to do amke it work? Thanks khris

You need to use a timing light and check the timing. As for the igniters, if the leading one doesn't work, the tach won't work - not exactly the best way to test it, but it may work for you. The trailing ignitor shouldn't affect the engine that much when unplugged.

Tach signal is from the trailing ignitor.
