How do I and how much do i have to grind/cut to fit 5.25" speakers in our 4" location

Like the title says; how do i (ie what tool do i use) and how much do i have to grind/cut away in order to fit 5.25" speakers in our front 4" hole locations?

I think i have seen John64 do it, but he doesnt get into how much we have to cut and what tool he used.

If i remember when installing the 4" speakers up front, they could move around quite a bit inside the hole so the hole must already be larger than necessary...

Any thoughts or ideas?

Oh its for my 84 GSL

Make a paper or cardboard template. Also make sure the new speakers aren't too deep to fit.

my SA was modded by my neighbor to accept 5.25. he said you didnt have to cut away much. he used apline type s speakers. in my late GSL i cut the door and door panels for 5.25. much better IMO. theyre in a better location.

if you need some 5.25, ive got a set of infinity kappa 52.7i i might sale you.

Use some wood, Cut a Hole for the speaker and then mount it to the panel with the magnet into the 4" hole.

Yep, there is plenty of depth behind the stock kick panel. Just shim the larger speakers out a bit. Well, as long as your not using some cheesy *** $20.00 all plastic E-bay speaker with mongo tweeters hanging out the front of it.

ok, now i understand. the part that confuses me is where you say mount it with a magnet? why not screw it into the kick panel? this is essentially how i mounted my 6x9 in my hatch.

He is talking about the magnet on the speaker itself contacting the sheet metal in the kick panel

Read it again. Hades said magnet INTO the 4" hole. All he is talking about is just the magnet for the new larger speaker will be in the old hole for the 4" speaker as opposed to the whole speaker.

Make a hemmoroid *** donut looking thing that can be screwed into the existing mounting points. THen mount the speaker to the wood. It'll stick out a little farther but not too much I'd imagine.

Kind of like this.

This one is going from a larger hole to a smaller but Smaller to Larger works also.

You could use a Dremel tool with a cut off wheel to cut it out, if your patient. Depending on the thickness you could use tin snips.

Well, i ended up buying some MB Quart components they need a 4.49" hole and are not too deep. The stock mounting hole up front is 4.25", so i will probably just use a spacer somewhere between .25" to .50" thick and it "should" mount up.

I will let you know when i put the system together, so far it is coming along nicely, the weak point now is my head unit

haha dang. i love mine. esspecially for working out or running. if you dont want anything special, then you could get by with any radio that would play MP3. it all depends on your needs and what youre wanting to spend.

if youre interested, i have a $400 kenwood i used to run in the FB. the ribbon on it got broke. its an AWSOME radio. it costs about $75 to get radio shack to fix it. about $30 if you do it yourself. the only reason i didnt get it fixed and run it was because i wanted something ipod based. id sale it for $75 shipped.
