how can you remove rustproofing
My car has been rustproofs. (its actually CAUSING my doors to rust because it plugged the weep holes.
Anyhoo, how can you quickly remove this stuff. It makes my engine compartment look like shit. its all a crap brown color. I have had okay success with 3m adheasive remover and fairly good success with a torch and a rag. does anyone know a chemical that takes this stuff off quickly. |
I have not had to remove rust proofing being down here in Texas:p: but I have removed the "tar" sound deadner on the inside of the cars. I have done this 3 times now on race cars:eek: I have found no easy way! I have used a torch and putty knife:confused: I have also used a hammer and scraper:confused:
Seems to work a little better scraping without heat then cleaning the residue with a wet, and I mean real wet rag wetted with plain old paint thinner. Hint, use throw away rags and be careful with the rags, they will ignite!! I was welding the same day I did this and noticed a "little flicker" in the corner of my helmet....well it was a blazing pile of rags!!!:D Nothing a little fire extingusher couldnt handle:p: |
this stuff is by no means hard. you can scrap it away with your fingernail. If I heat it with a torch I can wip it away. It takes about 2-3 times to get a clean finish though.

Sometimes, you can use paint thinner to get that stuff off.
|
wouldnt that wreck the paint then. If I use the torch it barely even heats the metel but the proofing comes off fairly easy.
|
The paint thinner doesnt hurt the paint. By the way it took me 1 full week to remove all of it in the cockpit! Total weight was 28 lbs.! I have to admit though, the car is really loud! You really cant hear anything anyway with the motor though.
