How can i tell if my 13b is Street Ported?

I just bought a 74 rebuilt 13b for 700.00 bucks. The seller told me that it was a massive street port. I am not the smartest guy, so when i looked at the motor it had the exhaust sleeves taking out so to me it looked bigger in there. Compaired to my 12a these holes were way bigger. I sent pics to my friend and he told me that it is not ported because you can still see the mold marks from the factory. I tried 4 times to post pics but it kept saying load error or security issue. I am using a Sony Cyber Shot and can post on Facebook but not here. If you guys have the time can you post pics of your street port. PLEASE. If my motor is not ported than i got a rebuilt 13b for 700.00 but i was told it was ported thats why i sold my stuff to get it.

does it have a lopey idle?

There was a vid posted of the car running and yes it does have a lope to it at idle. I dont want to start s@!t with the person i bought it from, so i wont say who because he is a cool dude and he helps me out alot, its just that i was told that it was not ported. It dose not lope like a big cam in a piston motor but it dose lope.

ur upload errors is probably due to the file size being too large. the intake ports still have that distinct bevel that's molded into it from the intake side. porting usually makes it less noticeable. and by that vid, it doesn't sound ported.

A smooth idle or lack thereof won't tell you if the motor is ported or not. You need to check whether the intake ports look/feel smooth, or if they're still rough from the casting process. An educated eye could also tell from the size and shape of the exhaust ports, but without pics we can't help you there.

here's trying to get a few of vince's FB images of the ports to show up here.

They, "the ports" fell smooth as a babys bottom. Also with my nice led flash light it looks like you can see where it was grinded from left to right. It is not rough at all like casting.

Being you saw the exhaust ports, what do you think?

rxtasy3 09-26-10 08:16 PM

i think that if it is ported who ever did it didn't continue all the way thru the intake runners. that one exhaust port i posted looks a slip with the tool from the header side. but it's odd that they would be cutting from that side tho. and the intake end of the runners usually ground to match the gasket.

btw do u not see the pic of the exhaust in the other post?

yeh i saw that i was trying to do it myself but you beat me to it LOL. So long story short i bought a non ported, freshly rebuilt 13b for 700.00.:(

Directfreak 09-26-10 08:23 PM

Not necessarily. You have any pics while he was building it?

rxtasy3 09-26-10 08:23 PM

i still think u got a good deal, ported or not. let us know how it runs once u get it bolted in.

No, nothing in writing. He never lied to me before, he always helped me out and worked with me on parts and such. But i have a bigger engine for my 7 so it will be a little faster.LOL! I still need alot more things to finish the swap. I guess time will tell. That is all the pics i have so i guess the mods can close this thread if no one else has any ideas. Thanks for all the help guys, i will post updates when i figure how to shrink these pics i am trying to post. Damm i am dumb. Oh he told me a good friend ported his housings a while ago for him. This motor was in his old RX3 or RX4.

rxtasy3 09-26-10 08:37 PM

get u a photobucket.com account and upload them there. the site automatically generates the link to post on a forum for them to show in ur post like i did. otherwise i sometimes use irfanview(its free) for resizing images.

74 housings, sleeves removed, little emissions tubes also removed, or plugged below (they need something there blocking access to oil pan lol). Port appears larger than stock. You got a good deal.

Cool! Thanks for all the replies.

From the photos, I can not determine if it was ported or not, but I can tell you by the looks of it , that it wasn't ported correctly if it was ported at all. You can still see casting marks on the intake and a true port would enlarge the entire runner and match the LIM.

If the motor has strong compression - you got a good deal; regardless.

PercentSevenC 09-27-10 01:12 PM

The exhaust is definitely ported. Dunno about the intake, but if it feels smooth inside, it probably is.

theNeanderthol 09-27-10 01:43 PM

At serious autocross events, sometimes they'll have these little flexible inspection deals, where they can look into a person's motor to see if they have a ported motor and trying to pass it off as stock.

Maybe you can find someone with one of those... Sorry I don't know the name of the instrument, ha ha
