How can I improve my weak power windows?
81 GSL
My power windows work, but theyre so slow and choppy, feels like theyre getting stuck and sometimes wont make it all the way up, but they do always work. What can I do to make it nice and smooth? Im planning on installing Remote power windows and I want to make sure theyre in good shape. |
spray some silicone spray in the window seals /or where they run/slide in? U know what i mean! OR upgrade to a FC alternator FD? i just put an FC In and everything works better!

I've seen wiring to power windows get quite corroded... replace the wiring.

do a search.

Thanks Turbo and jrs10, Ill take your advice!

Replace your stock battery cables with some fresh ones.

Take the power window switches out of the direct connection to the battery by adding a relay. This will also save the switches from going bad early.

I find most of the problem can be solved by taking off the door panels and lubing all of the tracks, wheels and gears with white lithiun spray lube. Also make sure that the window guide gaskets are staying in place while the window goes up.
I don't recommend lubeing any of the gaskets that are 'fuzzy', all that will do is collect more debris, which may scratch the window and be nearly impossible to clean. If you get silicone on the paint, it is very difficult to repaint, even later down the road. |
I think the only true fix is new door tracks. The rubber things the window rides in. I have the same issue.

Thanks for all the replies.
Anyone posting trying to HINT that "hey loser, use the search", well... you need to chill. Some of us actually do search, and do not find what comes up in search informative enough. So we ask in a new thread, there is NOTHING wrong with that. Not to mention not everyone uses the same keywords when searching so results will vary quite a bit. Again, thanks for all the genuine replies, I will take all into consideration, I am sure I can fix this problem now. |
You should clean the switches too. If you're careful they come apart pretty easily. Just use a Q-tip and some contact cleaner. I think you'll be surprised at how much that helps.
|
Thanks bstranger, I will surely do that. This thread turned out perfect!

I understand this site is to learn and help each other out.
If you don't like something, like people asking for help or guidance, why waste time typing something nasty, just move on and don't rag on them. Some seem to just take pleasure on calling other people names. |

im wanting to do the relay setup as shown on this thread, but when i went to local automotive store there were a number of relays that i could purchase, 30A ones 40A ones..... which is best suited to the window itself, as all the wiring diagrams i own dont tell me the specs of the electric motor itself, or should i check to see if there is a label on the motor by taking off the door card
